وَما لُمتُهُ يَوماً عَلَيها وَقَد حَكى

تَأَخُّرُها مِنهُ تَعَذُّرَها عَنهُ

Never did he blame her, though he told

Of her keeping away, of her refusing him,

لِيَهنِكَ فَضلٌ لا يُنالُ لَهُ كُنهُ

كَأَنَّ العُلا مَعنىً وَقيلَ لَهُ كُنهُ

So that some merit beyond attainment was his—

As if highness of nature had said to him, “Be!”

وَلَم يَستَمِع يَوماً نِصائِحَ دَهرِهِ

إِذا قالَ في مالٍ يَجودُ بِهِ صُنهُ

And he never listened to the counsels of Time

When it said, as to wealth, “Be generous with it!”

وَلي فيهِ آمالٌ إِذا ما تَأَخَّرَت

كَفانِيَ عَنها ما تَقَدَّمَها مِنهُ

In it are hopes for me, whenever she is late—

What came before of it is enough for me.
