يَموتُ كَما ماتَ العُناةُ مُعَنّاهُ
وَما عَلِمَ الواشي بِغامِضِ مَعناهُ
The one he torments dies as captives die,
And the talebearer never knew his hidden meaning.
تَوَخّى رِضاكم أَو تَوَقّى جَفاكُمُ
فَماذا تَوَقّاهُ وَماذا تَوَخّاهُ
He sought your favor, or guarded against your coldness—
What, then, did he guard against, and what did he seek?
وَلَم يَشُمِ الشَكوى وَلا سَئِمَ الهَوى
وَلا سامَ ما يَهوى وَلَكِنَّهُم تاهوا
He never caught the scent of complaint, nor wearied of love,
Nor sought what he desired—but they went astray.
