When a dwelling stands deserted for a lifetime, then after it
comes a dwelling in the grave that, when inhabited, lies desolate.
O you who recoil from it with eye and brow,
you will grow familiar with it through the very thing from which you recoil.
Reflect; speak to the soul, and understand its answer:
Does the dust hold mere dust of you—or a jewel within it?
And say: “It is a weighty utterance; and surely He
punishes if she gives her answer, and pardons and forgives.”
