    Silence is safer—but if you wish my blood

    not to flow, then pardon me as I pour forth my words.

    Between me and my very being, may God judge for me

    against it. Would that I were nothing in nonbeing—

    and as for my tale: neither my age nor what befell in it,

    nor my cares, nor my fancies, nor my aspirations,

    وَلا أُجَرِّدُ في الشَكوى سِوى قَلَمي

    nor my sword, which helplessness makes me sheath;

    in complaint I unsheathe nothing but my pen.

    Nor the nights whose fires were kindled

    by thought—nothing rose in this world but my standard.

    In waking, I behold evil with my own eyes,

    while goodness my heart has found in dreams.

    If morning blesses me with it in the night,

    then light is uglier to my eyes than darkness.

    وَالعَثرُ في الرَأيِ لَيسَ العَثرُ في القَدَمِ

    I stumbled in every judgment that led toward you;

    a misstep in judgment is no mere stumble of the foot.
