You bestowed upon my eyes, in your face, a garden;
so do not forget my tears—for over you they are clouds.
You said that, after parting from you, I had not died;
but any life that brings no joy is death.
You turned away when, wasted by love, I did not speak to you;
yet the lover’s repeated breaths are speech.
How strange that his phantom did not come to visit
by day, when the darkness of cares surrounds me.
Why can slumber not find its way to my bed,
when there, for a traveler through darkness, a fire blazes?
