لَو كُنتُ جاوَبتُ الحَمائِمَ نائِحاً
قالَ الوُشاةُ أَضاعَ سِرَّكَ بائِحا
Had I replied to the wailing doves
The slanderers would say my secret's laid bare
سَلطائِراً صَدَعَ الفُؤادَ بِسُحرَةٍ
أَتُراهُ غَرَّد صادِعاً أَم صادِحا
My heart rent by a charming bird
Does it chirp merrily or lament in despair?
يا ضَعفَ مَن أَمسى الفَريسَةَ في الهَوى
وَغَدا الحَمامُ لَهُ هُنَالِكَ جارِحا
How weak is he who in passion became prey
And the dove that was his neighbor turned foe
