إِذا ما نَظَرتُم وَالعُيونُ سَواجِرُ

فَلا تَعجَبوا أَن تَسحَروا أَعيُنَ الناسِ

When you gaze with languishing eyes,

Do not wonder that you entrance people’s eyes.

وَحَسبي بِذِكرى قاتِلي أَن بِحُبِّهِ

تُقَصِّرُ عَنها لَو سَرَت سَورَةُ الكاسِ

It suffices me to be slain by the memory of her love,

Which makes me neglect even Sura Al Kaws.

دَعو لي وَحدي ذِكرَها لا مُشارَكٌ

خَلا الكَأسَ لا يَأبى الفَتى شِركَةَ الكاسِ

Leave the mention of her for me alone; no partner have I

Except the goblet - the youth disdains not the partnership of the cup.

فَلا تَتبَعوا رَأى الأَماني في عَسى

فَإِن عَسى ما لَيَّنَت مِعطَفي عاسِ

So do not follow the opinion of hopes in an “if only”,

For “if only” has never smoothed my cloak's folds.

أَتَحسَبُها ماءً جَرى في زُجاجَةٍ

وَما هِيَ إِلّا النارُ ذابَت بِأَنفاسي

Do you reckon it to be water flowing in a flask?

Nay, it is fire melted by my breath.
