ماذا يُوَسوِسُ في الصُدورِ

مِمّا يَحُطُّ عَنِ الصُدورِ

What whispers in the hearts

Of that which weighs down upon hearts

لا بَل وَيَنقُلُ ساكِني الد

ورِ الرِجالَ إِلى القُبورِ

Rather it moves the inhabitants of hou-

ses, men, to graves

لا بَل وَيَرفَعُهُم عَلى ال

أَجذاعِ في طَلَبِ السَريرِ

Rather it elevates them upon

tree trunks in pursuit of the marriage bed

أَولا إِلى ظُلَمِ الحُبو

سِ عَلى هَوى طَلَبِ السُتورِ

First to the darkness of prisons

Due to the passion of pursuing veils

وَيلَ الظَلامِ خُلِقتَ مِن

هُ فَلا تُطَمِّعُها بِنورِ

Woe to the darkness, you were created from

it so do not tempt it with light

نَفسٌ هِيَ الشَيطانُ دَلَّت

هُ بِآمالِ الغُرورِ

A soul which is the devil led

it with false hopes

ما كُنتَ تَطلُعُ في الأَمي

رِ فضكَيفَ تَطلُعُ في الوَزيرِ

You were not looking to the prince

so how could you look to the minister

وَلَقَد جَرَيتَ إِلى مَدى

ما مُنتَهاهُ سِوى المَنثورِ

And you have certainly run to the extent

that its endpoint is only scattering

وَخَوالِفُ الأَولادِ تَر

بو في المَزايِلِ لا الحُجورِ

And the successors of children grow

in trash, not mansions
