غالَبتُ كُلَّ شَديدَةٍ فَغَلَبتُها

وَالفَقرُ غالَبَني فَأَصبَحَ غالِبي

I battled every hardship and overcame it,

But poverty battled me and became my conqueror.

إِن أُبدِهِ يَصفَح وَإِن لَم أُبدِهِ

يَقتُل فَقُبِّحَ وَجهُهُ مِن صاحِبِ

If I reveal it, it brings disgrace, and if I hide it,

It kills—so cursed be the face of such a companion.
