فَإِنَّ لِلحَربِ عُراماً شَزرا
إِنَّ عَلَيها سائِقاً عَشَنزَرا
For truly, war possesses a vehemence and a hostile glare,
And set over it is a driver, harsh and unyielding,
يَنصِفُ مَن أَحجَمَ وَتَنَمَّرا
عَلى نَواحيها مَزَجّاً زَمجَرا
Who disciplines alike the one who recoils and the one who snarls,
Patrolling its flanks with a goad, roaring aloud,
إِذا وَنَينَ ساعَةً تَغَشمَرا
If they flag for but a moment, he compels them with reckless tyranny.
