إِلى اللَهِ أَشكو لا إِلى الناسِ أَشتَكي
أَرى الأَرضَ تَبقى وَالأَخِلّاء تَذهَبُ
I complain to Allah, not to people
To God I complain, and not to men do I complain;
I see the land remains while friends go away
For I see the earth endure, while beloved friends depart.
أَخِلّايَ لَو غَيرَ الحِمامِ أَصابَكُم
عَتِبتُ وَلَكِن ما عَلى المَوتِ مُعتَبُ
If other than death had taken you, my friends
O my friends, had it been other than death that struck you,
I would complain, but one does not blame death
I would have reproached, but against death there is no reproach.
