1. لمن جيرة دون اللوى والشقائق

    يعطُّون بالاغذاذ ثوب السمالِق

    For those with a neighbor below Al-Lawaa and Al-Shaqaa'iq

    They give with generosity a garment of fine silk

  2. عجال السرى لا يستقل معرَّسٌ

    بهم غير أرجاء الطلاح الأيانق

    The lively knights whose steeds none can outrun

    But the beautiful gazelles frolicking in the meadows

  3. كأن فتيت المسك ذرَّ سحيقُه

    مع الصبح في أكوارهم والنمارق

    As if the pure musk's essence was scattered

    In the early dawn over their resting places and carpets

  4. إذا رحلوا عن منزل غادروا به

    مهاجاً لمشتاق وطيباً لناشق

    When they depart from an abandoned camp

    They leave behind a longing for the loving and a scent for the passionate

  5. وفوق الحوايا كل غيداء دونها

    حميَّةُ غيرانٍ ولوعة عاشق

    And above the sands every maiden like a gazelle

    Is a protectress for her lover and a tormentress for the ardent

  6. سحبن فضول الريْط صوناً كأنما

    خفاف المطايا من شعور المفارق

    They sweep the ground clear of pebbles in caution as if

    The light steps of the steeds would disturb the parting

  7. وأعرضن عن رجز الحداة تحرجاً

    عن النظم في ذكرى مشوقٍ وشائق

    And they turn away in shyness from vulgar raillery

    Of verse that reminds of a coveted and delightful companion

  8. توهمت حلمي بعدهن سفاهةً

    وخفَّتْ أناتي خفة المتنازق

    After them my dreams seemed like folly

    And my sighs as light as the blink of an eye

  9. وعهدي بنا والدار قربٌ لشاحطٍ

    ووصل لمهجورٍ وودٌّ لوامقِ

    My pact with them and the house is nearness to one fallen

    And bonding to one abandoned and affection to one transient

  10. ومرتبع الحي الجميع من الحمى

    رياض العوالي في رياض المبارق

    The leader of the tribe from the sanctuary

    Gardens on highlands among gardens of nobility

  11. مجامع أيسارٍ وموقف سُمَّرٍ

    ومطعن فرسانٍ وشارات راشق

    Assemblies of generosity and a halt for the sleepless

    And a thrust of horsemen and signs of the archer

  12. ومبرك أنضاءٍ ومُلقى سوابغِ

    ومسحب أرماحٍ ومنْضى سوابق

    And a blessing of the bright-faced and a readiness of the eloquent

    And a draw of spears and a charge of the outpacing

  13. فلما دعا داعي النوى واستخفَّنا

    تجاوبُ غربانِ الفراق النواعق

    So when the caller to depart called and we were taken by surprise

    By the cawing of the crows of separation clamoring

  14. ظللت أداري دمع عينٍ قريحةٍ

    أبى الوجد إلا أن تجود بدافق

    I went around shedding the tears of a painful eye

    That refused but to overflow plentifully

  15. كأن اهابي مُشْعَرٌ خيبريةً

    غداة سرى ظعن الخليط المفارق

    As if my eyelids were decorated Yemeni swords

    The day the mixed company of friends departed

  16. تنفست حتى قال صبحي ضَريمةٌ

    من النار هاجتها رياح المشارق

    I sighed until my fading dawn said

    Fired by the winds from the east

  17. أهجراً وما أضمرت غدراً ولا سرى

    مشيبي في ليل الشباب الغُرانق

    Without rancor or betrayl as my temples turned white

    In the night of flourishing youth

  18. أذن فوصال الغانيات نفيضة

    أمحَّتْ فما فيها اعتصامٌ لواثق

    The union of singers is a torrent

    That obliterates all steadfastness

  19. ذرا الدمع يجري مستهلاً فما الهوى

    بدانٍ ولا وعدُ الحسان بصادق

    Shedding tears copiously for the passion is not

    Sincere or the promise of bliss honest

  20. وإن وراء الحب حباً وصالهُ

    مجال المذاكي في دماء الموارق

    For beyond love there is love and attaining it

    Is the realm of ambitions in the blood of the loved ones

  21. منعت القِرى إن لم أقُدها عوابساً

    تثير عجاج المأزق المتضايق

    I will forbid the encampments if I do not raid them

    Exciting the tumult of the narrow mountain paths

  22. خوارج من ليل الغبار كأنها

    نجوم رجومٍ أو سهام مراشق

    Assailants in the darkness of dust as if they are

    Shooting stars or piercing arrows

  23. تجانف عن ورد الفلاة ظميئةً

    فلا ورد إلا من دماء الفيالق

    Turning away in thirst from the wild roses

    For there is no rose but one dyed with blood

  24. يعيد عليها الكرَّ كل مجاهرٍ

    بأخذ العُلى والمجد غير مسارق

    Every pretentious one repeats his attack

    Usurping glory and honor without fear of consequences

  25. رجال نَبتْ أغمادهم بسيوفهم

    فعاجوا على أغمادها في العواتق

    Men whose sheaths have grown from their swords

    They overpowered their sheaths in assaults

  26. يزينون ما أبقى الطعان من القنا

    له برؤوس الصيد لا بالبيارق

    Adorning what the warrior left of the spear

    Not with flags but with the heads of prey

  27. أروع بهم صبحاً ظهيرة يومهِ

    تعصب تاجٍ واحتلال سُرادق

    Glorious in the morn and eve of their day

    Binding crown and occupying canopy

  28. دعوت تميماً والرجال بعيدةٌ

    وقد ضقت ذرعاً بالخطوب الطوارق

    I called on Tameem while the men were distant

    Exasperated with the terrible afflictions

  29. فقام بنصري من قريش ممجَّدٌ

    شديدُ مضاء البأس سهل الخلائق

    So a glorified man from Quraish rose up to help me

    Fierce in valor, easy in manners

  30. فتىً قُدَّ قَدَّ المشرفي فصفحهُ

    لصفحٍ وحدًّا شفرتيه لعاتق

    A young man as honorable as the exalted

    His forgiveness and solitary sword strike at the neck

  31. يشام ندى كفيه من بشر وجهه

    كما شيم منهلُّ الحيا بالبوارق

    The dew of his palms reflects the joy of his face

    As the place of descent reflects light in the full moon

  32. فيا أيها العافي أثرها غنيًّةً

    بذكر المنى عن زجر حادٍ وسائق

    O you who grant safety, make her dwellings prosperous

    With the memory of wishes without the rebuke of a reproacher

  33. إلى أيمن الزوراء شرقي دجلةٍ

    ربيع المقاوي في السنين العوارق

    To the right side of Zawra in the east of the Tigris

    Spring of meadows in tumultuous years

  34. فما ابن طراد بالنَّؤوم عن القِرى

    ولا مرتج أبوابه دون طارق

    The son of Tarrad is not deterred from encampments by sleep

    Nor is his door left without a knocker

  35. أجار على الأيام حتى ذمامه

    لا مرتج أن يصول بعائق

    He took refuge until his protection

    Was not violated by a deterrent

  36. وما مندلٌ فاهت به بعد هجعةٍ

    جمار غضىَ شبت بأتلع شاهق

    No aroused camel bellowed after dozing

    Except a vigorous young camel bleating on a towering dune

  37. من القُطُر الأحوى يكاد أريجه

    يذيع لدى الداريِّ دون المحارق

    From the perfumed leather its aroma almost

    Spread to the nearby meadows from afar

  38. أُتيح له نشر الخُزامى ونفحه

    من الغيد ما بين الطلى والبنائق

    The flowering cannabis and its fragrance was allowed for him

    Between the hills and slopes and crests

  39. تداعته أرواح الصِّبا فبعثته

    لشربٍ حِلالٍ بالحمى والأبارق

    The spirits of youth rushed to serve him

    A permitted drink in the sanctuary and dwellings

  40. فمادت بمن لم تسر الخمر نشوة

    من الطيب في عرنينه والمناشق

    It did not intoxicate one who taste of wine did not delight

    With scent in his vessel or passion in his companions

  41. بأطيب من عرض الرضا حين تنش

    ر المدائح غُراً بين نادٍ ومازق

    With better than being pleased when

    Eulogies elicit pride between critic and adversary

  42. بهاليل غُرَّان المجالي عوارمٌ

    على الأمر طعَّانون تحت البوارق

    Brave men protecting glories, warriors

    Under banners piercing with spears

  43. مطاعيم في المشتى مطاعين في الوغى

    طوالُ العوالى والطلى والشقاشق

    Blending with pleasure, obliging in battle

    Lofty and long-necked and strong

  44. إذا صرح الموت الزؤام تذامروا

    على الروع واجتاحوا حماة الحقائق

    When death rouses the insects they band together

    Against havoc and sweep away the landslides

  45. بنودهم خفَّاقةٌ وقلوبُهم

    إذا شهدوا الهيجاء غيرُ خوافق

    Their understanding intuitive and their hearts when

    They witness war not wavering
