تمنَّى مقامي منْ تميمٍ كُلَيْبُها

وساءَ جَريرَ أن عُزيتُ لدارمِ

I wish I could stay with the tribe of Tamim

Whose oratory outshone Jarir's eloquence

وأيْقن أنَّ الدهر لم يُخْلِ منهم

خطيب نَديٍّ أو كميَّ مَلاحمِ

I'm certain time will bring forth one like them

A fine speaker or a valorous warrior

وما ذاك اِلا أنْ دلَفْتُ لموقفٍ

بمُعتلج الفخرين من آل هاشمِ

That's because I frequented the station

Of the two glories of Hashim's descendants

بحيث الوزير الزَّينبيِّ يَصوبُني

غمامَيْ عُلاً من نجدةٍ ومارمِ

Where the minister Zeinab aimed his clouds

Lofty from Najd and Marma towards me

فأغْنى به من بأسهِ ونوالهِ

اذا جاد عن بيض الظُّبي والغمائمِ

With it he spared me his might and favour

When he was generous beyond measure

أغَرُّ طيلقُ لوجهِ لا يستكينهُ

وجومُ الرزايا أنْ يُرى غير باسم

A free man whose face brooks no slight

Stern in mien, seen by none but solemn

تدارك في فضلي فوارِطَ غيرهِ

وأنْجدني حتى استعادَ مَظالمي

He made up for others' shortcomings in me

And helped me regain all I had lost

وأمهي بنَعماهُ غُروب خواطِرٍ

نبَتْ من وقوع الحادثات الإَواشم

And with his blessings erased lingering worries

That sprouted from misfortunes and perils

وأِني سأجْزيهِ بغُرِّ مَحامدٍ

سوالِمَ من عيبِ الكلام كَرائمِ

And I will reward him with praise unfettered

Safely free of defects, a precious prize
