اذا اغبرت فجاجُ الأرض محْلاً

فغاضَ الغمرُ وابيضَّ النَّضيرُ

If the land becomes dusty and turbid,

The flood rises and the streams turn white,

وأخلَفتِ الغوادي كلَّ أرضٍ

فسِيَّانِ الأريضَةُ والصُّخورُ

And the valleys leave every land,

The slopes and rocks become smooth,

وقيَّد عِرْمِس السرواتِ صُرٌّ

له عصفٌ يَخُبُّ به السَّفيرُ

And twisted branches bind the willows

With raging winds that carries the ambassador,

أَقامَ الصَّاحبُ الوهَّابُ نوءاً

من المعروفِ عارضُهُ مَطِيرُ

The generous master established a shelter

Of favors, with pouring rain from its edges,

فغادرَ كل هامدَةٍ عَزازٍ

يميسُ بها ويهتَزُّ الغَميرُ

So every silent and mighty fortress

Trembles with fear and dread.

فماتَ المَحْلُ خوفاً من نَوالٍ

به يحْيا مِن الموْتِ الفقيرُ

The land dies of fear of abundance,

With which the poor comes to life from death,

بكَفِّ أغرَّ تحْسُدُه الغَوادي

ويرْهبُ بأسَهُ اللَّيثُ الهصورُ

With a palm that makes the valleys envious

And its might frightens the courageous lion.

عِمادُ الدولةِ الحامي حِماهُ

اذا ذَلَّ المُحامي والنَّصيرُ

The pillar of the state, its protector protects it,

When the defender and the supporter weakens,

تكسَّرُ في ملاحمهِ العَوالي

ويُجبْرُ من مكارمِهِ الفقيرُ

In his battles, the lofty are shattered,

And through his generosity, the poor is compensated.

وتُطْبَعُ من عزائمهِ ظُباهُ

فلا فَلٌّ يَشينُ ولا دُثورُ

And his resolves prints its miracles,

So no disgrace or destruction happens,

اذا عبَّت جحافلَها الأعادي

فَهازِمُها الصَّحائفُ والسُّطورُ

When its armies encounters the enemies,

It defeats them with papers and lines.

يُفَلُّ المَجْرُ من اِيجاز حرفٍ

ويَحْطمُ لاحِقَ السُّمر القصير

The tide ebbs with the conciseness of a letter,

And it destroys the late ominous gathering,

اذا عَلَتِ الغماغِمُ عندَ قاعٍ

شَآها من مَزابِرهِ الصَّريرُ

When the clouds are high near a bottom,

It sees from its sites, the humming.

تأرَّجُ من مناقبه اللَّيالي

كأنَّ حديثَ مسْعاهُ عَبيرُ

The nights smell of its glories,

As if the conversation of its hearing is ambergris.

على الأعدْاءِ طيرٌ من سِهامٍ

وفي النادي شَمامٌ أو ثَبيرُ

For the enemies there are birds of arrows,

And in the club, a falcon or a harrier.

يُصَرِّفُهُ وليدُ الحيِّ لُطْفاً

وفي الكُبَراءِ متْبوعٌ أمِيرُ

He who brings life, steers it gently,

And he is obeyed by the grandees.

ويعدلُ في الرعيَّةِ حين يقْضي

وفي أموالِهِ خِرْقٌ يَجورُ

And he judges the subjects with justice,

And in his wealth, there is a hole that betrays.
