I shall send it forth among the houses, ranging far and wide,
and at its coming, resting places will collapse upon those asleep within:
Tamimite, Sayfite, Darimite—
prudence its driver, resolve its guide.
It pours down amid a dust-dark battle whose heat leaves—
men thirsting, while it gives the keen, cold blades their fill.
Its hooves, complaining together of the kings’ injustice, cried aloud:
“Their crowns and diadems!”
A churning mêlée packed with young warriors, whose hearts,
when they storm the armored ranks, are boulders.
Every hardship in every ordeal becomes easy for them
when they are enraged, and the far-distant draws near—
against a people in whose midst no fire-stick strikes a spark,
even when beacon-fires rise above the mountains.
Bold indeed at driving guests away, yet abject
when the cavalry wheels, seeking someone to pursue.
It was they who clouded affection’s purity and disturbed
the breeze of meeting, though union had stilled it.
It was they who foolishly turned the heights of honor against me,
though I had committed no offense—the nights bear witness.
Among the things that grieve me is that my soul grows attached,
and despite the beloved’s wrong, my heart still courts.
Too proud to stoop to baseness, yet tender in love:
so love is not driven out, nor is the army in pursuit.
The dawn of gray breathed through the night of my hair-part,
untimely, though no crown-binder had yet bound a crown upon my head.
At five-and-twenty, I had never imagined a gray hair,
save that a mounting care had set my head ablaze.
How long shall I feed my soul hopes of every lofty aim,
while Time drives me back from it and bars my way?
And shall I look for bounty to rain from the hands of a people
in whose keeping hopes and noble deeds die?
If I praise them in radiant rhymes,
then, to vindicate me, the odes satirize me through that praise.
