أنا والزِّنادُ ببَرْدهِ وتَصَبُّري
سِيَّانِ في الإِخْفاءِ والكِتْمانِ
The fire-striker and I—in its coldness and my patient endurance—
are alike in concealment and secrecy.
لكنَّهُ بالقَدْحِ تَظْهَرُ نارُهُ
وسَرائري أعْيَتْ على الإِخْوان
Yet when struck, its fire appears,
while my secrets have baffled my brethren.
فإذا أضِمْتُ فهِمَّةٌ لا تَرْتَضي
أنْ تَشْتكي إِلاَّ إلى الرَّحْمنِ
So when I kept them hidden, you understood—you would not consent
to complain to anyone but the All-Merciful.
