1. Seek refuge with me in an illustrious, pure-bred lord—

    one of Banū al-Naḍr, who stains Mashrafī blades with blood.

  2. For combat and for peace alike, he possesses might:

    unyielding is his deadly assault, while his palm is generous.

  3. The first inspiration of speech suffices him in place of what

    his thoughts and deliberate reflection have left to ferment.

  4. His resolve and piety, whenever he sets his mind upon a mat—

    —ter, are his weapon and the protection of his Sābirī armor.

  5. He is gentle toward boon companions; but if he is made—

    —to endure something base, his Hāshimite pride makes him tower.

  6. In forbearance he towers, a man of lofty plateaus;

    and in combat his prowess has the vastness of the sea.
