1. The nobles of Luʾayy ibn Ghalib have indeed known,

    when deeds of glory are one day recounted in the assembly,

  2. that ʿAli lavishes bounty even when destitute,

    and forbears with his enemies though he has the power;

  3. nor does he fend off lavish giving with an excuse

    when excuses arise to stand in the way of more.

  4. Headlong into fearsome undertakings, he presses forward,

    bold when spears and cutting swords grow weary.

  5. The swift steeds of resolve bear him, climbing

    toward his goal—the noble, lean thoroughbreds.

  6. He is the man: his merit is all-embracing,

    universal; and praise of him travels everywhere.

  7. Praise and acclaim of him bring peace to my eyes,

    though my eyelid spends the night awake over verse.
