1. شكراً لدهري بالضمير وبالفم

    لما أعاضَ بمُنعمٍ عن مُنعمِ

    My thanks to fate for giving me, in mind and mouth,

    The means to praise one who granted me gifts,

  2. لا سلوةً بل صبوةً بمجانسٍ

    بَرَدَ الوصالُ بها فؤادَ المُغْرمِ

    Not to console me but to raise me with gatherings

    Where love's union cooled the heart of this lovesick soul.

  3. خيرُ الوداد ودادُ أفْوهَ ناطقٍ

    لعبت به الجُلَّ ولم يتصرَّمِ

    The best affection is that of one whose eloquent mouth

    Played with allure, and was unaffected.

  4. حيِّ المنيعَ الجارِ يُقرنُ بأسُه

    في النائباتِ إلى جزيلِ الأنْعُمِ

    The refuge of the guarded neighbor in hard times

    Is to the one of abundant gifts.

  5. غرس الصنيع فلا اللسان بصامتٍ

    دون الثناءِ ولا الوفاءُ بمنجمِ

    The planting of favor - neither tongue stays silent

    Of praise, nor loyalty remains unmarked.

  6. لي نفس مشغوفٍ بسالف عهده

    لم ترض نسيانَ الرفيق الأقدم

    My soul craves conversations of the past,

    Never pleased to forget that oldest friend.

  7. مضروبة بشبا الخطوب تنوشُها

    بالجور عاديةُ الغَدور الأزْلمِ

    Struck by the calamity of separation, she sips

    Unjustly the deadly poison of aloofness.

  8. حسناء آنسةٌ إذا هي أكْرِمَتْ

    ونوارُ باديةٍ إذا لم تُكرمِ

    A beautiful, intimate maiden - when she is generous

    She is the light of the land when not honored.

  9. يلوي مواعدها الزمان وتقتضي

    إنجازهُ فإلى متى وإلى كم

    Time disappoints her appointments, and requires

    Fulfilling them - so until when and how much?

  10. سعد الجهول ولاح علمي ذائدي

    عما أروم فليتني لم أعْلَمِ

    Good luck made the ignorant thrive and my banner of knowledge fade

    From what I intended, would that I hadn't learned!

  11. وغدوت ذا حزنٍ بفضلٍ مطربٍ

    غيري فكنتُ كمنعمٍ لم ينعمِ

    And I became sad because of another's joyous grace

    While I was like one who enjoyed no bounty.

  12. واستهون القومُ المقالَ سفاهةً

    فالفضلُ للسكيت لا المُتكلمِ

    The people deemed words as foolishness,

    So favor is for the silent, not the speaker.

  13. وندمت للعمرِ المُقضَّ عندهُ

    فَلكادَ يقضي بالحِمامِ تَندُّمي

    And I regretted my life spent in his service

    When my only consolation was almost regret itself.

  14. هَمٌّ ثوى بين الضلوعِ مُبرِّحٌ

    لولا الوزيرُ وفضلهُ لم يُنْجمِ

    A worry settled in my ribs, escaping

    Had it not been for the minister and his grace it would not have shone.

  15. بمصمِّمٍ للخير غير مُنكِّبٍ

    ومُنكِّبٍ في الشرِّ غير مُصمِّمِ

    With resolve for good, not turning away,

    And turning to evil, not resolved.

  16. شرفٌ لدين الله ليس بمُعورٍ

    في الحادثان ولا بنكْسِ مُحْجمِ

    An honor to Allah's religion, not disgraced

    By events, nor defeated and withdrawn.

  17. فتبلَّج المجدُ الأثيلُ طلاقةً

    عن ثغْر مُبْتهجٍ به متبسِّمِ

    So glory's eternal brilliance burst forth

    From a cheerful face making those who saw him smile.

  18. بمجردِ الأيامِ في حالاته

    علاَّمةٍ بالدهْرِ غيرِ مُعَلَّمِ

    A sign of the days in their states, unmarked

    By the passage of time. His creed:

  19. مستهترٍ بالمأثرات شعارهُ

    وضعُ الرحالِ بها وحمْلُ المغرم

    Disregard for hardships, his motto -

    To set foot on them, a load for the enamored.

  20. عُلْويُّ برقٍ لاح في أفق العُلى

    فأضاء من حظِّ الفقيرِ المُظْلمِ

    A High rising star shone on the horizon of heights

    And illuminated the darkened fortune of the poor.

  21. طابتْ مخايلُه لشايمِ لمْعِه

    عِلْماً ببادرةِ السَّحوحِ المُثجمِ

    The imaginations of the blameworthy shone at the brilliance of his gleam,

    Knowing the first proof of the frowning critic.

  22. خِرْقٌ تبرعُه رفيقُ نوالهِ

    ومتى تُسلْ جدواهُ لم يتَلوَّمِ

    A tear his generosity repaired, and when

    Would its flowing ever be blamed?

  23. تتجنب الغبراء عَقْوةَ أرضهِ

    رهَباً لمنهل النَّوالِ المُرْزمِ

    The dust avoids the ruggedness of his land,

    Fearing the watering place of sweet bounty.

  24. ثبتٌ توقِّره الخطوب بحيث لا

    صبرُ الحليم لها ولا المُتَحلم

    Firm whom calamities cannot endure,

    Neither can the patience of the forbearing nor the dreamer.

  25. يزدادُ من أجْلابهنَّ رزانةً

    كالريح تُظهرُ من أناةِ الأيْهم

    He gains, through their striking, more composure,

    Like the wind displays the composure of the stoic.

  26. غمْرُ الخلائق تُتَّقى سطواتهُ

    مُتواضعٌ لم يُلْفَ غير مُعظَّمِ

    The flood of creatures - his might is feared,

    Humble, never beholden except as glorified.

  27. تتلو سجاجتهُ عوادي بأسِه

    إنّ الغِرار وراء صفْحِ المِخْذمِ

    His fierceness follows his tranquility, verily

    Fury comes after the drawing of swords.

  28. وافٍ إذا نقضَ الزمانُ عُهودهُ

    لقيَ المُعاهد في الجديل المُبْرمِ

    Loyal, if time breaks its pledges

    He meets the ally at the place of covenant.

  29. لو واثَقَ الرمضاء في حبِّ الصدى

    لغدا يَعُدُّ الضبَّ حوتَ الخضْرم

    If the wilderness trusted the love of echo

    It would count the wolf as friend.

  30. غيرانُ يحمي ما يشاء ببأسهِ

    لا جارهُ بِلَقىً ولا مُستسلمِ

    A protector who guards what he wills with his might

    Without a treaty, and none can resist him.

  31. لو لاذت الغبراء منه بعصمةٍ

    لحمى ثراها أنْ يُداسَ بمنْسمِ

    If the dust sought refuge in his protection

    He would guard its bridal gifts from being trampled.

  32. ومُشردٍ ينزو به فرقُ الرَّدى

    نَزْوَ المُدامةِ بالنزيف المُفعم

    And a nomad whom separation's horsemen drive

    Like the swaying of the drunk overflowing with drink.

  33. جمِّ الظنون يكاد يدرأ خوفهُ

    محض اليقين إذا بدا بتوهُّم

    He gathers all guesses - his fear almost wards off

    Fear itself when it appears with misgivings.

  34. رسبت به السُّدَف الضخام كأنه

    صلْدٌ توغَّل لُجَّ يَمٍّ مِدْأمِ

    To him cling the mighty sands as though he were

    An impenetrable fortress sunken into the depths of a valley.

  35. يأوي لتعريسٍ فيبعثُ رجلهُ

    مَرُّ النَّسيم على المكانِ المُرْتمِ

    He comes to take rest but sends forth his leg

    Like the passing of the soft breeze over the resting place.

  36. نِسْعُ المطيَّة والرسيم لحذرهِ

    بحجارةِ المِعْزاءِ كالمُتبغِّمِ

    The gait of the excellent horse and the trotter slow in caution

    Like the sullen-faced at stones of the goat pen.

  37. يهفو به ضخمٌ تخاذل عندهُ

    نصرُ المُطاع فباسهُ لم يعْصمِ

    The bold cower before him, and his might did not

    Save the protected, so his power was not restrained.

  38. آويته فحميته من ذُعْرِه

    دُون الرجال وكان عينَ المُسلَمِ

    I gave him refuge and protected him from his panic

    Besides the men, and he was the protected Muslim.

  39. وطريد مجدبةٍ غدتْ بثرائهِ

    شهباءُ مُرْديةٍ كحدِّ اللَّهْذَمِ

    And a starved vagrant whose poverty through my wealth

    Became a celestial orb shedding abundant rain.

  40. سفعتُه من غبرائها عرَّاقَةٌ

    تَذَرُ الخميلةَ تُرْبةَ المُتيممِ

    I raised him above the dust of his humiliation -

    A purification leaving the garment spotless.

  41. ما زال إخلاف النجوم ينوشهُ

    حتى أثابَ به فُوَيْق المُصْرمِ

    The succession of stars continued to give him drink

    Until the cloth came to cover the vine-trimmer.

  42. حتى إذا ما الذودُ صرَّم نحضَه

    لَسُّ الرغام بكل فجٍّ أقْتَمِ

    Until when the shield of protection decreased his intoxication

    He camped at the meadow where there was no fuller thorn.

  43. وأقام بالصرم العزيب فلم يُطِقْ

    دركَ المعاطِن باللقاحِ المُعظمِ

    And he stayed at the barren herbage but could not

    Reach the lofty pastures and great threshold.

  44. واشتدَّ محْلٌ فاغتدت أشلاؤُهُ

    للمُترف العيَّافِ أكْرم مطعمِ

    And a place grew strained, so his body parts dispersed

    To the luxury-loving glutton - the best food.

  45. أمَّ الطريدُ نوال مُولي نِعْمَةٍ

    فأناخَ عنكَ بالمُجيرِ المُطعم

    But the protected found refuge in the grace of a patron

    So he rested from you under the generous, noble host.

  46. إنَّ ابن خالدٍ الكريم أرومةً

    غيثُ الفقير ومنْعةُ المُستعصمِ

    Indeed the son of Khalid the generous intends

    To be rain for the poor and protector of the defended.

  47. غمرُ المواهب مستريحٌ رِفدُه

    فذُّ السؤال أخو نوالٍ تَوأمِ

    Abundance of gifts, resting at ease - his support

    Sufficient for requests, brother to attainment.

  48. تدني له الأقصى مطيُّ عزائِمٍ

    يسخرن من ولد الجديل وشدقمِ

    The most distant draws near to him, steed of resolute determination

    Mocking the son of the maidservant and little mouth.

  49. وخَّادةٌ لا تشتكي لغَب السُّرى

    صُبرُ الخفاف على الفلا والمَخْرم

    A cheek that does not complain of the absence of intimacy -

    Patience of the brave over iron and flint.

  50. ويذودُ عنه مُسدَّدٌ في قصده

    يهدي الصوار له بغير تلوُّمِ

    And a protector facilitates his just aim,

    Guiding the sparks without hesitation towards him.

  51. جمُّ الغوارب ماؤه من نقْعةِ

    فضلتْ سوابحُه مرورَ العُوَّمِ

    He took an auspicious hope and left it

    To flow freely upon the meadows.

  52. جزلٌ كموج البحر تمخض لُجه

    رأدَ الضُّحى هوجاءُ لم تتنسَّمِ

    As if the roll of stars in the darkness

    Were the gathering of wave to wave.

  53. ضاقت به الدهناءُ واتَّسعت به

    في الرزق تاليةُ النسور الحُوَّمِ

    By Allah, your noble, honorable merits

    Have brought you near to the honor of the Greatest Imam.

  54. عمَّت إغارتهُ فشمس نهاره

    مسلوبةُ التشريق عند الملْحمِ

    Modesty concealed them so the poverty of time proclaimed them -

    The firm is compelled by disobedience of glory.

  55. ودجا فكادت أن تضِلَّ رماحُه

    في الطَّعْنِ لولا ربطُها بالأنجمِ

    Creation split its goodness and he obtained it

    Seeing the wrong of glory if it does not sew.

  56. واستمطرت مُعْطُ الفُلاة جيادهُ

    فولَغْنَ منه في المسيح وفي الدَّمِ

    So he took from you extended, with no limit,

    In thrusting and in striking the submissive.

  57. من كل مُحتدم الحفيظة لودنا

    للحشر حاذَرهُ حريقُ جهنَّمِ

    And declared permitted from you one of eloquent speech

    Judicious, when he speaks perfectly coherent.

  58. نغَضتْ شمائله الحقودُ فهمَّ أن

    يزري بإيجافِ الجوادِ الشَّيظم

    The listener contemplates his words

    Measuring eloquence in the most generous carpenter.

  59. وسما به الأمل المجيدُ فخلتَهُ

    يجري الجواد على قذالِ المِرْزمِ

    He speaks concisely in his glances

    So the duration of his gaze is alphabet letters.

  60. وكأنَّ مُنكدر النجوم بغيْهبٍ

    شدُّ الكمي إلى الكمي المُعلمِ

    If time has wronged me with its injustice

    I think this time is my time to progress.

  61. للهِ دَرُّ مناقبٍ شَرَفيَّةٍ

    أدنتك من شرف الإمام الأعظمِ

    So drive forth the one whose hands planted - I boast of you

    And to your pride I belong.

  62. كتم التواضعُ فضلها فأذاعهُ

    فقر الزمان إلى الشديد الأحْزم

  63. نشق الخليقةُ طيبها واسْتافَهُ

    فرأى عُقوق المجد إن لم يَرْثمِ

  64. فاستلَّ منك مهنَّداً لا حَدُّهُ

    نابٍ ولا في الضَّرب بالمستثلمِ

  65. وأحلَّ منك دنيَّةُ ذا منْطقٍ

    فصلٍ إذا ما قال غير مجمجمِ

  66. يتأملُ المُصغي إلى ألفاظِهِ

    قسَّ الفصاحة في النِّجار الأكرمِ

  67. يتكلمُ الإيجازَ في لحظاته

    فدوام نظرته حروفُ المُعجم

  68. إن كان أخَّرني الزمانُ بجوره

    فأظنُّ هذا الحين حينَ تقدمي

  69. فاسْقِ الذي غرستْ يداك فإنني

    لك أعْتزي وإلى فخاركَ أنْتمي
