1. أقم يا حسامي في صوانك واهجم

    شربت دماً لم أُروِّك بالدَّمِ

    Rise up, my sword, in your sheath and attack!

    I drank blood and did not quench your thirst for blood.

  2. ألا أنَّ وجدي بالمعالي مبرحٌ

    وأبرح من وجدي بها وجد مخذمي

    My passion for glory never ceases,

    Yet my passion wearies of glory and is sated.

  3. طويتُ لها خمساً وعشرين حجَّة

    وواحدةً طيَّ الرداء المسهَّم

    For her I composed twenty-five arguments,

    And one that wrapped my cloak, fastened.

  4. أذود الصبا عن مطمحٍ غير ماجدٍ

    وأنهى الهوى عن موقف غير مكرم

    I ward off unworthy youthful passions

    And end vain desires and dishonored stances.

  5. يقولون جانبت النسيب وإنما

    نسيبي ذكِرْى غارةٍ وتقحُّم

    They say I shun my kindred but rather

    My kindred are memories of raids and plunges.

  6. وفي غزل العليْاء لو تعلمونه

    شفاءُ غرامٍ وادكارُ متيَّم

    And if you but knew the love songs for the lofty ladies

    They cure the sickness of love and console the sleepless.

  7. وكم مغرمٍ بالمجد عزَّ سُلوُّهُ

    فأعرض إلى قول لُوَّم

    And how many enamored of glory their night visitations hindered

    So they turned away to blame.

  8. إذا قيل هذا مفخر ظل مائساً

    كما اضطرب المجهود من أم ملدم

    When told this one is proud, he remains downcast

    As the wounded stirs restlessly in pain.

  9. سأبعثها شعواءً أمَّا لمغنمٍ

    يحقق آمالي وأمَّا لمغرم

    I will send it spirited either for gain

    To achieve my hopes or for one lovesick.

  10. تميميَّةً لا صبرها عن تقاعُسٍ

    مُذلٍّ لا أقدامُها عن تهجم

    A poem whose spirit brooks no sloth

    Degrading, whose feet rush to attack.

  11. تُجد رسومَ المالكيَن ودارمٍ

    وسُفيانَ والصَّيْفيِّ منها وأكثم

    In it are depicted the ways of kings

    And lands of Sufyan and Sayfi and more.

  12. بحورُ نوالٍ لم تغضْ دون وارد

    وأطواد ملكٍ لم تُنل بالتَّسنم

    Seas of plenty where none is turned away

    And floodwaters of kings obtained without begging.

  13. سهرت وما حب الحسان بمسهري

    وهل منجدٌ فيما يروم كمتهم

    I have stayed awake though love of the lovely keeps no man awake

    What purpose is there in what the sleeper dreams?

  14. لبرق كلمع الهندوانيِّ دونه

    سحيقةُ حيٍّ أنجموا بالتهضُّمِ

    By it lightning is as the glint of Indian Steel

    The blackness of night lit up by flickering stars.

  15. ترامت بهم أيدي النَّوى وتزاوروا

    إلى عازبٍ عن أرضهم متوخم

    With it hands reached out and they came together

    To one far from his land, aloof.

  16. وعهدي بهم والدهر ملقٍ قياده

    إلى كل مشبوح الذراع غَشمْشم

    My vow to them though fate casts down its reins

    To every pure-hearted hero, stern.

  17. لبوسُهُم من سابريٍّ مُعسجدٍ

    وأرضهم من لاحقيٍّ مسوَّم

    Clothed they are in pliant coat of mail

    And their land is of clinging soft loam.

  18. غنيِّين من أرماحهم ووجوههم

    نهاراً وليلاً عن شموسٍ وأنجُمِ

    Rich through their spears and faces

    Day and night brighter than suns and stars.

  19. فبت كما بات السليم بقفرةٍ

    سرت في أعاليه مُجاجة أرقم

    I spent the night like a lost man in an empty plain

    Where the wolf howls by craggy stones.

  20. تزاحم أشجاني إذا ما ذكرتهم

    زحام المقاوي عند باب ابن مسلم

    My passion raged until it was like I sought refuge

    From the flames of a kindling fire.

  21. فتىً ليس بالنوام عن طارق الدجى

    ولا عن قراع الدارعين بمحجم

    And I raced until had the earth cast lightning

    It would not have outpaced my words and mumbling.

  22. يسيل دماءَ الكُوم وهي منيفةٌ

    ويضرب في رأس الكميِّ المكمَّم

    A thrusting like the pummeling of hail, continuous,

    And a strike like the snarling of a wolf, unceasing.

  23. نفى واضح التشريق عن شمس أرضه

    دخانُ قدورٍ أو عجاجةُ مِصْدم

    I paralyzed them with the paralysis of prey at dawn

    And drove them like a branded flock.

  24. حِمامٌ لأعداءٍ وأمْنٌ لخائف

    ورأيٌ لمعتاصٍ وعفوٌ لمجرم

    When the army marched to invade, their necks bowed

    To your name before their departure and advance.

  25. وأبلج من عُليا عُقْيل يَسرُه

    حميد المساعي والنَّدى والتكرُّم

    So if the lance could take pride in your power

    And head to the foe on its own, unguided,

  26. عفيف إزار الليل لا يستفزُّه

    ظلامٌ ولا تغتاله ذات معصم

    Yours is the brightest fame whose light guides

    The heads of steeds in the darkest gloom.

  27. وما نشوة من قرقف صرْ خديَّةٍ

    تدفَّقُ من ضنْك الجِران مُفدَّم

    Gleaming from the spear-points they kept safe

    The prize of battle in every mighty arena.

  28. إذا سكبت في الكأس خلت شعاعها

    على غسق الظلماء جذوة مُضرِم

    Bold lions they never yielded to calamity

    Or submitted to an unjust tyrant.

  29. لها حَبَبٌ يرفض عنها كأنَّه

    عيونُ جرادٍ أو زواهرُ أنجم

    With them the night, though fierce their might

    Is generous, and though lavish their bounty, unending.

  30. أُتيحت لمشعوف الفؤاد مُدلَّهٍ

    رمته الغواني عن قسيِّ التَّصرُّم

    Valiant defenders on the fearful frontier

    Lethal to the people in every fray.

  31. فعادت بأشجان وهاجت صبابةً

    له وتمشَّت في مُشاشٍ وأعظُم

    In their presence every great man is honored, esteemed,

    Greeted with peace and magnified.

  32. بأحسن من هز القوافي لعطفه

    إذا رُجِّعت بالأفواه المُترنمِ

    Quick to speak right, not after pondering,

    Solemn in patience, not after forebearance.

  33. يطيف به من قيس جوثَة فتيةٌ

    جريئون في يوميْ ندىً وتقدم

    When the fires of war died down, their fuel

    On the plateau is dry kindling for the breaking.

  34. يحيون بسَّاماً كأن رداءهُ

    يلاثُ برُكْنيْ يذبلٍ ويلملم

    AHowling desert wolf who borrows the lightning’s light

    For a twisting acacia or crumbling crag.

  35. ومجْر كمُنهال الشَّقيق وعالجٍ

    مُضرٍّ بأكْناف البلاد عرمرم

    The south wind buffets it as if it were

    A heavenly sphere in the swell of the roaring sea.

  36. خلا فَرَقاً من بأسه كل مربضٍ

    وأقفر من إِرهابه كل مجثم

    You brought them so neither darkness with its gloom

    Nor winter's cold can do them harm.

  37. يخال إذا ما الخرق ضاق بخيْله

    بنا قرْمدٍ أو جنب رعْنٍ ململم

    Tattered wanderers from Damascus and Thayyera

    And stony wasteland from Najd, crumbling.

  38. كأن بأعلى بيضه من عجاجه

    رداء خُداريٍّ من الليل مُظلم

    Your father reaped glory in every battle

    And purchased undying fame in every season.

  39. فلا أفْقَ إلا من مُثارِ عجاجة

    ولا أرض إِلا من سَراة مطَّهمِ

    Who settled invincible might through his sword

    While those who envied witnessed his rise.

  40. تلته سباع الطير والوحش فاغتدى

    بطِرفٍ ومغوار وسِيدٍ وقشعم

    Crowning the brows of kings with his might

    And seizing the summits of power by force.

  41. غلا حرُّه حتى كأن استجاره

    سنا لهبٍ أو عرفجٍ متضرم

    And leading them, clubs of warriors, to thrust

    Knowing nothing but advance.

  42. وأجلب حتى لو رمى الأرض صاعق

    لمَا نمَّ من ألفاظه والتغمغم

    Over them are men of towering stature

    Who brandish the switch of the branches and stems.

  43. طعان كقرع النِّيب غيرُ مباعدٍ

    وضرب كَولْغ الذِّيب غير ملعثم

    When the desert plains are drained of rainwater

    His blood revives the valley, brimming over.

  44. شللتهم شل الطرائد في الضحى

    وسقتهم سوق المطي المُخزَّم

    A youth who was richer than pouring rainclouds

    And greener than the grass of spring, sprouting.

  45. إذا رمت غزو الجيش ذلت رقابه

    إلى اسمك من قبل ارتحالٍ ومقدم

    He passed and glory after him passing was like

    Blossoms plucked that would no longer thrive.

  46. فلو يستقل الرمحُ منك بسطوةٍ

    إلى القوم عن سُرىً وتجشم

    But steeds and life just trappings are

    Too lofty to be compared to rain or lightning.

  47. لك الحسب الوضاح يهدي ضياؤه

    رقاب المطايا في دجى كل معتم

    The foe imagines if they parry its blows

    I greet them with a kiss and greet the surrendered with gifts.

  48. تألق من شُم العرانين أحرزوا

    رهان المجاري في مدى كل معظم

    Wealth, O Crown of the Hashimite house, I see in you

    With you before me, my purpose and destination.

  49. غطاريف صيدٌ ما استكانوا لحادث

    ولا أذعنوا للجائر المتعشرم

    Take it as a mare tested free of any doubt

    To stumble or earn blame and disgrace.

  50. بها ليل أمَّا بأسُهم فلفاتكٍ

    كميٍّ وأما جودهم فلمعدم

    From the coward’s heart its melody emboldens

    And from the mute’s mouth, eloquence.

  51. نوازلُ بالثغر المَخوفِ أعزةٌ

    على الناس طعَّانون في كل ملحم

  52. تقابل في ناديهم كل ماجدٍ

    مشارٍ إليه بالسلام معظَّم

  53. سريع صواب القول لا عن تفكُّرٍ

    رزين حصاةِ الحلم لا عن تحلُّم

  54. إذا خمدت نار القِرى فوقودهم

    على الهضب عيدان الوشيج المحطم

  55. ومُستنبحٍ يسترفد البرق ضوءه

    لفرع يَفاعِ أو تجشم مخْرم

  56. تُرنحهُ ريحُ الجنوب كأنه

    خليَّةُ فُلكٍ عند لُجَّةِ خِضْرِم

  57. أضفتم فلا جُوُّ الظَّلام ببادرٍ

    لديه ولا بأسُ الشتاء بمؤلم

  58. حشايا رحال من دمقس وثيرةٌ

    وغرُّ جفانٍ من نضيدٍ مهشَّم

  59. أبوك كسوب المجد من كل معرك

    ومبتاع ذكر الحمد في كل موسم

  60. ومستنزلُ العز المنيع بسيفه

    وقد كلَّ عنه ناظرُ المتوسم

  61. مُعفرُ تيجانِ الملوك ببأسه

    وآخذُ مُعتاص العُلى بالتَّعشرُم

  62. وقائدها قُبَّ البطون جَوارياً

    إلى الطعن لا يعرفن غير التقدم

  63. عليها رجال من سَراة مُسيَّب

    يهزون أطراف الوشيج المقوَّم

  64. إذا نضبت غُدْرُ الفلاة لواردٍ

    أمِدَّ بسيلٍ من دَم الهام مفْعم

  65. فتىً كان أغنى من سحاب مُنولٍ

    وأنضر من وشي الربيع المُنمنم

  66. مضى وكأن المجد بعد ذهابه

    قنان الذري لولاكَ لم تُتسنم

  67. ألا إنما قرواش موتٌ وعيشةٌ

    ترفَّع عن تشبيه غيثٍ وضيغم

  68. يغولُ العِدى أن ساوروا سطواته

    بِبُوسي ويُحيي المُعْتفين بأنعُم

  69. أظنُّ غِنىً يا تاج دولة هاشمٍ

    وأنت أمامي للسُّرى ومُيممي

  70. فخذها حصاناً لم تُزَنَّ بريبة أنْ

    تحلٍ ولم تخطب لنكسٍ مذمِّم

  71. يشجع من قلب الجبان نشيدها

    ويفصح من لفظ العيي المُجمجم
