1. للهِ دَرُّ غَمامٍ سَحَّ صيِّبُهُ

    سَحّاً علىَّ ولم ألمحْ ولم أشمِ

    May Allah shower blessings on

    A cloud whose rain has washed me

  2. هَمى ومُرًّ اِبائي غيرُ مُغتْصبٍ

    مني وأقعس عزِّي غيرُ مُهتْضمِ

    Though I saw naught and smelled naught

    He watered me while my father suffered drought unstolen from me

  3. فَبِتُّ أزْجي القوافي كل شاردةٍ

    غرّاءَ عالمَةٍ بالشُّكْرِ للنِّعْمِ

    So I patch rhymes, each mismatched

    As thanks for blessings, a gleaming sign

  4. وما الغمام سو كفِّ ابْن منْقبةٍ

    مُحسَّدٍ من بني الجاوانِ ذي همم

    That cloud was but the palm of Ibn Munqidh

    A man of high ambitions, envied among the Jawan

  5. مُهلهلُ الخير والأيامُ قد شهدتْ

    أنَّ المهلهل حلفُ البأسِ والكَرم

    Hilal, goodness itself, and days have witnessed

    Hilal oathbound to valor and magnanimity

  6. محطِّمُ السمر يوم الروع في مُقلٍ

    ومُغْمِدُ الهند وانياتِ في القِمِ

    Smasher of idols on the day of panic in weakness

    Scabbard of India and softness in harshness

  7. وقاتلُ المحلُ بالجدوى اذا خمدتْ

    نارُ القرى واضحلت نشأة الدِّيم

    Slayer of evils with glory when the fires

    Of home died down and life grew cold

  8. يسقي البلاد اذا اغبرَّتْ جوانبُها

    في الجدب والحرب صوْبَيْ نائل ودم

    Who irrigates the land when its edges

    Are dusty, in drought and war, a copious rain

  9. ويُكْرم الضيف والجار المُقيمَ به

    حتى يبيتا من الَّلأْواءِ في حَرَمِ

    Who hosts guest and neighbor staying with him

    Till they rest secure from fear in a sanctuary

  10. اذا اسْتغاثا ضياء الدين جاءهُما

    غَيْرانَ يمنعُ بأس الجوْر والعدم

    If enlightened by faith they cry out, he comes to them

    A shelter, preventing injustice and destruction

  11. لا يستبيحُ أسيراً عند نُصْرتهِ

    ولا يُقَحِّمُ في أعقابِ مُنهزمِ

    He takes no captive when victorious

    Nor chases heads in the heels of fugitives

  12. ولا يُصارمُ وِدّاً غابَ جانبهُ

    لكنهُ واصلٌ للْخِلِّ والرَّحِمِ

    Nor crosses swords with an absent ally

    But befriends both near kin and far relation

  13. حمى أبا الماجدِ الرحْمنُ مالعبتْ

    ريحُ الصَّبا بفروع الضال والسَّلم

    The Merciful protected Abu al-Mujahid whom

    The morning breeze played with the boughs of the straying and peaceful myrtle

  14. دُعاء ذي شَغَفٍ بالماجدينَ ولا

    كحُبِّهِ لكريمِ الأصْلِ والشِّيمِ

    A yearning man's prayer for the magnificent ones but

    No love of his like love of generous stock and trait.
