1. نبأٌ عادَ لَهُ الصُّبْحُ دُجىً

    وذعافاً رَيَّقُ الماءِ الزُّلالِ

    News returned at dawn obscured in gloom,

    And morning dew as fine as scattered pearls.

  2. جلَّ أنْ يُبْكي دموعاً فَجرتْ

    أعْينُ الحيِّ بِمُحْمَرٍّ مُذالِ

    Before tears flowed from living eyes

    Flushed crimson with heartfelt sorrow.

  3. وانْثَنتْ مٍن حَزَنِ الدَّهر به

    غُرَرُ الأيامِ سُوداً كالَّيالي

    Days darkened by the sadness of fate

    Turned black as long nights.

  4. وعَلا عن ندْبَةٍ مِن بَشَرٍ

    فرثاه المجْدُ مفهومَ المَقالِ

    Above the cries of anguished souls

    Glory eulogized with mournful words.

  5. منْ لِعَقْرِ النِّيبِ في مُغْبرَّةٍ

    ولِقَوْدِ الخيلِ جُرْداً كالَّسعالي

    Who will avenge the Prophet’s grave defiled,

    And horses’ necks bloodied by unsheathed swords?

  6. ولريِّ السُّمْرِ والبيضِ الظُّبي

    من دَمِ الأبْطالِ في يومِ النِّزالِ

    Who will avenge the red and white horses

    Whose blood colored the battlefield that fateful day?

  7. وبني الآمالِ اذْ يَغْمُرهمْ

    فيضُ نُعْماكَ بعزٍّ ونَوالِ

    When hope’s sons were engulfed

    By your great gifts of glory and grace,

  8. نُزلوا في حالكٍ ذي خَصَرٍ

    فبذلْتَ الجودَ منْ غيرِ سُؤالِ

    They came to you in destitution

    And you gave generously without their asking.

  9. ولِجانٍ جَلَّ منهُ جُرْمُهُ

    فتغمَّدْتَ بصَفْحٍ واحْتمالِ

    To the sinner whose crime you forgave

    You showed clemency and tolerance.

  10. مَنْ لمِحْرابٍ مجيدٍ طالما

    قُمْتَ فيه بِصلاةٍ وابْتهالِ

    For the glorious pulpit where you long stood

    In worship and supplication.

  11. ولتْريلِ كِتابِ اللّهِ في

    ظُلَمِ الليل اذا لم يَتْلُ تالِ

    And reciting God’s book in the dark of night

    When no reciter intoned its verses.

  12. قَسَماً لو لا الاِمامُ المجْتبي

    باقياً لم يُلْفَ قلبٌ لكَ سالي

    By God, were it not for the chosen Imam

    No devoted heart would remain unruptured.

  13. والنُّجوم الشُّهْب من ولْدِ العُلى

    عُدَّةُ الدينِ واعْدادُ المَوالي

    The shooting stars, offspring of the Most High,

    Are the religion's weapons and loyal soldiers.

  14. ما ظنْنتٌ الموتَ يُمْضي بأسَهُ

    وسُطاه في بُحورٍ وجبالِ

    I never thought death could end your life

    Despite its far reach and high mountains.

  15. لا ولا خِلْتُ الثَّرى من طَوْقهِ

    أنْ يُجِنَّ البدْرَ من بعدِ كمالِ

    Nor that the earth could be rid of your presence,

    That the moon could wane after its fullness.

  16. اِن عصى موتْ فد صرَّفْتَه

    آمراً أو ناهياً في كلِّ حالِ

    You made death obey, commanding and forbidding,

    Saving those who sought refuge from death’s assault.

  17. ذُدْتهُ عن لائِذٍ مُسْتعْصِمٍ

    بعدما أزْجيْتَه تحتَ العَوالي

    Did your palaces become deserted,

    Or Paradise's gardens abandoned?

  18. أو خَلَتْ منك قُصورٌ أو حشت

    فجنانُ الخُلْدِ ليست بخَوالِ

    Did your weary body hide from view

    When efforts failed and strength departed?

  19. أو توارى منكَ شخْصٌ بالياً

    فالمَساعي الغُرُّ ليستْ بَبوالِ

    Did your throne become empty,

    And your sharp sight begin to falter?

  20. أو غَدتْ عُطْلاً حَشايا سُرُرٍ

    وقَرا الطِرْفِ فانَّ الرَّمْسَ حَالي

    For the eternal bliss of immortality

    Your spirit rose above the home of annihilation.

  21. شَرُفَتْ نفسُكَ عن دارِ فناءٍ

    لنعيمِ الخلدِ من غيرِ زَوالِ

    In the Most Exalted King’s company

    You found a higher calling than any earthly status.

  22. حيثُ لا تَرضى بِزُلفي مَلِكٍ

    فلك الجارُ المَليكُ المُتَعالي

    O light from the Most High’s consuming flames

    That burned brightly then faded after rising high.

  23. أيُّها الضَّرْمةُ مِن نارِ العُلى

    خَمدتْ بعد عَلَوٍّ واشْتِعالِ

    Long you were a raging fire for injustice,

    Or a warming glow for the righteous.

  24. طالما كنتَ حَريقاً لْعِدى

    موحيَ الَّلهْبَةِ أو دِفْءاً لصالِ

    Had rebellious fate ignited unrest,

    And a swarm of pigeons attacked in war,

  25. لو حمتْ منْ قَدرِ اللهِ وَغىً

    وانثْنى جيشُ حِمامٍ بقِتالِ

    Horses would have charged before you

    Galloping swiftly into the fray.

  26. لَجرتْ دونكَ جُرْدٌ سُبَّقٌ

    بمقاديمَ إِلى الطَّعْنِ عِجالِ

    Like wild cows amidst the rain clouds

    Raining swords continuously.

  27. عادياتٍ كَسَراحينِ الغَضا

    يتعثَّرْنَ بهاماتِ الرِّجالِ

    Whenever darkness engulfed the battlefield

    Gleaming blades lit up the scene.

  28. في عَجاجٍ كَغَمامٍ حافلٍ

    يُمْطِرُ البيدَ بِقانٍ مُتَوالِ

    Turning the plain into a sea of blood

    After the army was washed away in the flood.

  29. كُلما أظْلَمَ منه غَيْهَبٌ

    ضَوَّءتْهُ لامِعاتٌ مِن نِصالِ

    But God does not fail what He ordains

    With might and cunning against His creation.

  30. فأعَدْنَ القاعَ بحْراً مْن دَمٍ

    بعدما سالَ بجيشٍ ورِ عالِ

    Then oh how I grieve for the noble steed

    Killed without fighting or struggle.

  31. غيرَ أنَّ اللّهَ لا رَدَّ لِما

    شاءَ في الخْلقِ ببأسٍ وأحْتيالِ

    His blade rusted beyond polishing

    After the swordsmen failed to sharpen it.

  32. ثُمَّ يا لهْفي على ذي شُطَبٍ

    كَلَّ منْ غيرِ ضِرابٍ وقِتالِ

    And the noble horse retired still capable

    Reined in before reaching full potential.

  33. صَدِئتْ صفْحتُه مِن وَصَبٍ

    عَجزَ الآسونَ فيها عنْ صِقالِ

    He settled in dear Iraqi soil

    Worn not emaciated and frail.

  34. وعلى طِرْفٍ سبوقٍ في العُلى

    عَقلوهُ عنْ مَداهُ بِعقالِ

    Severing the cord without being branded,

    Parting with grace not haste.

  35. حَلَّ في بَطْنِ ثَرى عَرَّاقَةٍ

    ببِلىً لا بِنُحولٍ وهِزالِ

    Death always pursues unrelentingly,

    Spared neither by fleeing nor means.

  36. صَرَمَ الواصِلَ منْ غيرِ قِلىً

    وجَفا الخُلْصانَ من غيرِ تَقالِ

    With gaping mouth none can evade,

    Neither mighty of strength nor crafty of plot.

  37. انما الموتُ طَلوبٌ لاحِقٌ

    لا يُنَجِّي منه حَثٌّ في ارْتحالِ

    A hero indeed, but cunningly

    He exchanged glory for a quiet passing.

  38. فاغِرٌ فاهُ فما تَقْدَعهُ

    شِدَّةٌ البأسِ ولا فرْطُ المِحالِ

    O Imam of truth, be patient

    You are most worthy of patience and reliance.

  39. بَطَلٌ لكنهُ مِنْ حِذْقِهِ

    بَدَّلَ الضَّوْلَ بِشَرٍّ في اغْتيالِ

    Steel your heart that faced

    The horses’ assault without care.

  40. يا اِمامَ الحَقَّ صَبْراً انما

    أنتَ أوْلانا بصَبْرٍ واتِّكالِ

    If you grieve for what has transpired

    Glory itself will grieve and supreme goals falter.

  41. والبْسَ القلب الذي تلْقى به

    كَبَّةَ الخيْلِ قُسوّاً لا تُبالي

    He who attained his Lord’s pleasure

    And ascended through exaltations to exaltation.

  42. فاذا تحْزنُ منْ حادثَةٍ

    يحْزَنُ المَجُدُ وتخْتلُّ المَعالي

    For him the fullest rewards,

    And for him the Most Merciful after ascension.

  43. فالذي حازَ رِضيً منْ رَبِّهِ

    وتَسامى منْ جَلالٍ لِجلالِ

  44. فلكَ الأجْرُ جَزيلاً بَعْدَهُ

    ولهُ الرَّحمْنُ بعدَ الاِنْتِقالِ
