1. أودُّ ولي من شيمة المجد عاصمُ

    وأصْبو ولفظي من نسيبي سالمُ

    I wish that I possessed the traits of glory, my protector,

    And my words were faultless, from an honorable lineage,

  2. ويبلُغُ مني الوجد والشعر باسلٌ

    ويأخذ مني الحب والحزمُ كاتمُ

    Passion and poetry flow from me effortlessly,

    Love and resolve I take in, while keeping silent,

  3. عُلاَ جبلت نفس الأبي صرامةً

    فلا غَزلٌ إلى وغىً وملاَحمُ

    My soul was created with my father's severity and sternness,

    No frivolity towards chaos and battles,

  4. أبت غير زأرٍ أسد خفَّان مرعبٍ

    وللنَّوحِ بالدوْح النضير الحمائمُ

    I refuse anything other than the roar of a terrifying, growling lion,

    And cooing, in the sand dunes, of necked doves.

  5. حساني اللواتي بات فيها تغزُّلي

    تبثُّ سَرياها الملوكُ القماقمُ

    The beauties with whom I was infatuated and wrote poetry,

    Kings would secretly spread their gossip,

  6. وما اكتنفت يوم السلام من العُلى

    أسِرَّتها والخاشفاتُ المخاذمُ

    Never have I been shamed by the high-born,

    Though plotters and schemers were there to blame.

  7. ومُعتلج المجد الأثيل بموقفٍ

    به القَيْلُ مرهوب الخشاشة نائمُ

    And glory powerfully appears with pride,

    Where defeat is a dreadful visitor, asleep,

  8. وازجاؤها كالمرهفاتِ أوامراً

    لها الصعب سهلٌ والمغيَّبُ قادمُ

    Their commands are like well-honed blades,

    The difficult becomes easy, the absent arrives,

  9. وتعفيرها تحت العجاجة بالضُّحى

    وقد وطئتْ تعجَ المُطاع الصَّلادم

    Their marching at dawn under the battle standards,

    Tramples the obedient bands.

  10. فلا تَسحِلوا إبرام مُستحصَد القوى

    فيا طالما لم تُغْنِ فيه المَلاومُ

    Do not be hasty in challenging my collected strength,

    For too often have hopes been in vain,

  11. فإما ترَينْي عن بلوغ مطالبي

    أُذادُ كما ذِيدَ الظِّماءُ الحَوائمُ

    Either you see me attain my goals,

    Or persist like the thirsty, wandering beasts.

  12. وقد أضمرت مجدي البلاد وفاتني

    من العزِّ ما شادتْ تميمٌ ودارِمُ

    I have harbored in my heart glory and charm,

    Of such honor as Temim and Darim attained,

  13. إذا شمتُ عزماً يرعوي الملك عندهُ

    أُتيحَ له من حادثِ الدهرِ ثالمُ

    When I sense a resolve, before which even kings bow,

    Opportunity opens to it, time's fickle days.

  14. أداري وعندي نجدةٌ دون بأسها

    حِدادُ الظبى والُمرْهفاتُ اللهاذمُ

    My allies and I are capable soldiers,

    Ruthless lionesses and fierce warriors.

  15. وأبسم للمبكي نُهىً وحزامةً

    وقد يستهلُّ القلب والثغرُ باسِمُ

    And I smile at the weeping one, gently,

    Though my heart and lips are indifferent.

  16. فكم موقفٍ لي من مهيبٍ مُسودٍ

    وقد حجبت عنه السِّراةَ الصوارمُ

    How many formidable and perilous battles,

    Where I shielded it from the deadly blades.

  17. لدي حيث يسجو كل طرف محدِّقٍ

    وتُرعَد من غير الرَّسِيس القوائمُ

    My speech there, where each watcher is silenced,

    And hooves tremble, though no voice stirs.

  18. نطقتُ صؤوتاً والكلامُ إشارةٌ

    وأسفرتُ والطَّلقُ الأسرَّة واجم

    I spoke with lofty tones, though words were mere gestures,

    I left at dawn, disclosed, while darkness covered the land.

  19. سرى ذكر فضلي حيث لا الريف آهلٌ

    ولا الطرس معروف ولا الشيخُ عالمُ

    News of my merit spread where no people settled,

    No landmarks known, no elder was learned,

  20. وما زال يقتاد الرجال حديثه

    وإنْ عزَّ فَسْرٌ عندهُ وتراجِمُ

    His story has led men, though remote,

    Until the tribes' blood became devoted to him.

  21. إلى أنْ غدا فَدْمُ العشائِر أصمعاً

    له وجبانُ الحي وهو مُلاحمُ

    Kind to the base souls, though they revile him,

    He is self-restrained, holding back speech.

  22. رؤوف بأعراض اللئام ينوشُه ال

    أذى وهو محبوسُ المقالةِ كاظمُ

    When a handful of enmity is tossed at him,

    Praise follows it, while he remains silent.

  23. إذا وكفةٌ من بغيةٍ نضحَتْ له

    غدا حمده في إثرها وهو ساجمُ

    He rose above bounty of the age, yet he still

    Remained a legend, though his glory is ancient.

  24. ترفَّع عن فضل الزمانِ فكونُه

    حديثٌ ولكن مجدهُ متُقادم

    He refused floods of gifts, as though

    Aloof, while rain neglects the land.

  25. وجاشَر عن فيض النَّوال كأنه

    بنانُ جمال الدين والغيثُ حارمُ

    Radiant, smooth of brow, it hints at him,

    His cheerfulness and chivalry.

  26. أغَرُّ كرأد الصبح طلْقٌ جبينهُ

    يدلُّ عليه بِشْرهُ والمكارمُ

    When he perseveres seriously and opposes the foe,

    Wild beasts and doves wish for my stance.

  27. إذا استن في الجدوى وشد على العدى

    تمنَّى مقاميهِ الظُّبى والغمائم

    A lord whose sweet disposition the loved ones adore,

    Though, if he grants protection, his clinched fists.

  28. لبيقٌ تودُّ الغيد معسول عطفهِ

    وإنْ وهبته في الحفاظِ الضَّراغِمِ

    The does leap around him, while he remains firm,

    The lands are desolate, but he is fearless in the fray.

  29. تطيش الحُبى من حوله وهو ثابت

    وتنبوا المواضي وهو في الهول صام

    A noble man, true to his pledge,

    While any scheme, his love remains.

  30. فتى الخير أما عهده فهو مبرمٌ

    وكيدٌ وأما ودُّهُ فهو دائمُ

    If you seek friendship in his loyalty,

    No blame can reverse it, nor sin destroy it.

  31. إذا ما ابتنيت الودَّ عند وفائِه

    فلا الخطب نقَّاضٌ ولا الذنب هادمُ

    He gives generously with fullest pardon, though able,

    And sacrifices all he owns, though lacking.

  32. يجود بأوفى صفحة وهو قادرٌ

    ويبذل أقصى جودِهِ وهو عادمُ

    Speaking truly, the wicked fear his righteous zeal,

    When speech of the eloquent is captive.

  33. قؤُولٌ تهاب اللُّدُّ بأس صوابه

    إذا حبستْ نُطق الفصيح الخصائم

    Had he on the day of battle uttered a word,

    It would return as praise, and to his foe, defeat.

  34. فلو فاه في يوم النزال بحجَّةٍ

    لعادَ شباها وهو للجيش هازمُ

    Noble even when defeating his enemy,

    Though massive the war, and countless its campaigns.

  35. كريمُ مقام النصر عند عدوِّه

    وإنْ عظُمت حرب وجلَّت سخائمُ

    He is most inclined to ruthlessly slaughter the foe,

    Making the horizons cower, though they are merciful.

  36. إذا هو أزجى للأعادي مقَتلاً

    أهاب بها الإمكانُ وهي مراحِمُ

    No rumbling storm, violent in its onslaught,

    But for it there are replacements with fine horses.

  37. وما مجلبٌ داجي العجاجة بادنٌ

    له وجباتٌ بالفَلا وغماغمُ

    Impetuous, though his words are from a guarded heart,

    Blades, before the battle's roar, and piercers.

  38. صخوبٌ ولكن نطقه من حفيظةٍ

    صَوارمُ من قبل الوغى ولهاذِمُ

    The morning cloud's downpour obscures its cascade,

    Yet the land remains at night, in the valley, darkened.

  39. ويحجبُ عنه جوْنة الصبح نقعهُ

    فظهرُ الفلا ليلٌ على القاعِ عاتمُ

    The meadow's petals are plucked at once,

    And afterwards, only wandering beasts remain.

  40. ويُنفد غُدرانَ الرياض ورودهُ

    وأعقابهُ دونَ الشُّروع حَوائمُ

    It terrified the wildlife, until it submitted

    To its commonness, the shrieking, wailing beasts.

  41. حوى الوحش حتى استسلمت لعمومه

    من الذُّعر جِنَّانُ الصَّريم الغواسم

    The bare-flanked horses receive him as though they are

    Mares, brought forward for the feast.

  42. به السابقات الجرد قُبْلٌ كأنها

    سراحينُ مُعْطٌ تقتضيها المطاعمُ

    They forget caring for the useless trinkets,

    Preferring the ripe fruits, born on branches.

  43. توافرُ عن رعي الجَميم أوانسٌ

    برعي شكيرٍ أنبتتهُ الجماجمُ

    Knowing of a certain victory under each battle cry,

    Their delight arouses the aspiration of the seekers.

  44. درين بنصرٍ تحت كل عجاجةٍ

    فهنَّ لنقعٍ يثستثارُ شَوائمُ

    Over them the horsemen, armed as though they are

    Bracelets clasping the wrists of valiant heroes.

  45. عليها السَّراةُ الدارعون كأنهم

    قَساورُ خفَّانِ الشدادُ الضَّياغمُ

    The reins draped on them, dignified,

    Most moderate, far from disgrace or insults.

  46. نزتْ بهم الأوتارُ حتى رزينهُم

    خفيفٌ وأقصاهمْ عن الفحش شاتم

    The thrust of the spear continued until the steeds collapsed,

    Hooves cracked, and wrists shattered.

  47. وطال دراكُ الطعن حتى تهالكتْ

    جيادٌ وكلَّتْ أنملٌ ومَعاصمُ

    They poured on the plain a water whose lightning

    Had no game, dales, corpses, or skulls.

  48. وسحُّوا على البيداء ماءً بروقهُ ال

    ظُّبى وغَواديه الطُّلى والجماجمُ

    With the greater might of vizier Abul Rida,

    The fray subsided, and the invader withdrew.

  49. بأغلب من بأس الوزير أبي الرضا

    إذِ الذِّمْرُ نِكس والمقحِّم خائم

    He pleases you in tribulations, a triumphant man,

    Discerning, wise in judgement, resolved in purpose.

  50. يسرُّك منه في النوازل ماجدٌ

    رزين الحصاةِ حازمُ الرأي عازم

    Lightening from him the heavy burdens of the highborn,

    When duties weigh down the ruled's back.

  51. خففٌ عليه فادحُ الغرم في العُلى

    إذا أثقلت ظهر المُطاع المَغارمُ

    A gracious host, delighted to receive his guests,

    Whose bounty the wine-bearer loves, and Hatem.

  52. وشيك القِرى مستبشرٌ بضيوفهِ

    يودُّ نداهُ الغمْر معْنٌ وحاتِمُ

    Every proud victor raised him to the heights,

    When the seasons uncover what is concealed.

  53. نماه إلى عليائه كل ماجدٍ

    فخورٍ إذا ما استنبطتهُ المواسمُ

    His palms rain gifts on the loyal,

    As they circle around him, protectors of the guest.

  54. تبيح النَّدى للمُعْتفين أكفُّهمْ

    وهُنَّ حَوامٍ للنَّزِيلِ عواصمُ

    So they engaged in praising his virtues,

    When the talking ceased at the gatherings.

  55. فجاؤا بمضواعِ الثناء حديثهُ

    إذا فضَّ عند الأندياتِ لَطائمُ
