1. إذا خفت أخطار الطريق وذُعرها

    فَفقرُك أنجى من غِناكَ وأسلَمُ

    If you fear the dangers and turbulence of the road,

    Then your poverty protects you better than your wealth.

  2. فإن كان كُلٌّ للحساب مُعَرَّضاً

    فلُبْسُ العَبا من فاخر الوشي أنعم

    If all are destined for loss and ruin in the end,

    Then the garb of poverty is nobler than lavish attire.

  3. وإنْ كانت الأرزاق تجري بقسمةٍ

    فتركُك للحرص المُعذِّب أكرَمُ

    If sustenance is apportioned and preordained by fate,

    Then freedom from greed and avarice is more gracious.

  4. وإن كان مُحْصىً كلُّ قولٍ تقولهُ

    فصمتُك عما ليس يعْنيكَ أحْزم

    If every word you utter is fated to be heard,

    Then silence about matters unconcerned is wiser.
