1. ومعْسولِ الشَّمائلِ منْ نِزارٍ

    يَفوقُ بسعْيهِ عَمّاً وخَالا

    With the sweet disposition of Nizar

    Surpassing the efforts of an uncle and maternal uncle

  2. إذا لاقيتهُ لاقيْتَ وِرْداً

    على ظَمأٍ بهاجِرَة زُلالا

    If you meet him, you meet a rose

    To the thirst of a lively gazelle

  3. يَحُلُّ الضَّيْفُ منه في المَشاتي

    إذا ما يَمَّمَ الحَيَّ الحِلالا

    The guest can take from him in the drinking-places

    If he seeks the lawful livelihood

  4. بأكْرَمِهمْ إذا نزلوا مَبيتاً

    وأطْعَمِهِمْ إذا هَبَّتْ شَمالا

    The most generous of them when they lodge for the night

    And the most feeding of them when misfortune strikes

  5. وأرْفَعِهمْ إذا نَزلوا قِباباً

    وأمْنَعِهِمْ إذا ما الخَطْبُ غالا

    And the highest of them when they pitch tents

    And the most preventing of them when matters become grave

  6. كأنَّ جَبينَهُ سيْفٌ يَمانٍ

    أجادَ القَيْن صفْحَتهُ صِقالا

    As if his forehead is a Yemeni sword

    Its blade honed to a polish

  7. يَفوقُ الزَّعْزعَ الهوْجاءَ عزْماً

    وعند أنانِهِ الشُّمِّ الجِبالا

    He surpasses the shaking storm in resolve

    And before his helplessness stand mountains

  8. وبَسَّامٌ إذا بكَتِ المَواضي

    بيوْم الرَّوْعِ مُحْمَرّاً مُذالا

    A smiling face if the meadows weep

    On a day of calamity, red in misery

  9. وزيرٌ جَلَّ عنْ كِبْرٍ وبَأوٍ

    إذا الوزراءُ ظَنُّوهُ جَلالا

    A minister far above arrogance and evil

    When the ministers suppose him glorious

  10. فلمْ يذهبْ تواضعُهُ بمَجْدٍ

    ولكنْ مُبْلِغُ المَجْدَ الكَمالا

    His humility did not diminish his glory

    But the conveyor of complete glory

  11. وكمْ قدْرٍ يزيدُ مع انْحطاطٍ

    مُسِفُّ السُّحْب أصدقُهنَّ خالا

    And how much worth increases with decline

    The rainclouds its most truthful tattoo

  12. إذا عَسلَتْ مَزابرهُ لخَطْبٍ

    مُلِمٍّ دَقَّتِ الأسَلَ الطِّوالا

    If his correspondence is sweetened for grave tidings

    Of prolonged misfortunes pierced long spears

  13. تكونُ سُطورُها سَلماً وحَرْباً

    إذا سُطِرَتْ صِلاتٍ أوْ صِلالا

    Its lines will be peace and war

    If pacts or alliances are penned

  14. إذا ضَلَّتْ رَويَّةُ أَلْمَعِيٍّ

    أصابَ الأمر في الرَّأي ارْتجالا

    If the opinion of Al-Lam’i strays

    He hits the mark in opinion extemporaneously

  15. أيابا جعفرٍ حُزْتَ المَعالي

    فلم تتْرُكْ لطالِبها مَجالا

    Long live Ja’far you attained the heights

    And left no room for its seekers

  16. وأبْصرتَ الزَّمانَ بعينِ صَدْقٍ

    فلم تذخَر سِوى الإحسانِ مالا

    And saw the times with the eye of truth

    And hoarded nothing but kindness

  17. وعِلْمُك أنَّ مُلك الأرض طُرّاً

    سوى المعروفِ لا يُغْني قِبالا

    And your knowledge that the kingdom of earth is fleeting

    Except good deeds do not avail a span

  18. أعادَك ملْجأً منْ كلِّ خَطْبٍ

    فكُنْتَ لكلِّ مَلْهوفٍ ثِمالا

    He restored you a refuge from every misfortune

    And you were consolation to every distraught

  19. فهَنَّا كُلَّ عامٍ مُسْتَجِدٍّ

    بَقاؤكَ ما جَلا أفْقٌ هِلالا

    So every new year that dawns

    Your existence does not wane a crescent moon
