1. ولمَّا التقينا والمَعالي مُضيئَةٌ

    تألَّقُ عن وجهِ الأغَرِّ الحُلاحِل

    When we met and glory shone bright

    From the radiant face of the graceful gazelle

  2. تَوهَّمْتُ أنِّي لاهْتِزازٍ ونشوةٍ

    حسَوْتُ رحيقاً من سُلافةِ بابلِ

    I fancied I felt, from a thrill and rapture

    The sweet perfume of Babylon's maid

  3. سُروراً بفيَّاض النَّوالِ مُشمِّرٍ

    إلى المجد جيَّاشِ الوَغى والمراجل

    With joy at fortune's bounty, set out

    To glory, tumult of battle and fray

  4. وزيرٌ تحامى جارَهُ كلُّ ذاعِرٍ

    كما يتَحامى ضيْفهُ كلُّ ماحِلِ

    A minister whose neighbor each indigent

    Like a guest shelters, each outcast and rogue

  5. هو الواضع المعروفَ في كل معدِمٍ

    كما يضعُ الهنديَّ في كلِّ باسِلِ

    Known for kindness amid every outcast

    As the Indian is known for each miser and churl

  6. يمُدُّ له نادٍ رحيبٌ ومأزِقٌ

    بغمريْن من سَيلَيْ نجيعٍ ونائِلِ

    A refuge hospitable extends to him

    With two downpours of copious, bountiful rain

  7. وتتلو سِباعُ الطَّيْرِ طيرَ لوائِهِ

    ويسترْفدُ العسَّالُ جود العواسل

    The birds of prey circle his standard’s shadow

    The bee gathers the nectar of his ready munificence

  8. يُجاري لإحِرازِ المعالي جيادَهُ

    وأقْلامَهُ في طِرْسِه والهواجِلِ

    His steeds vie to gain him glory

    His pens, lances and well-honed blades

  9. ويُدْني له الغاياتِ وهي قَصيَّةٌ

    تخطُّرُ صَرَّارٍ ووثْبةُ صاهِلِ

    He reaches for the highest goals though distant

    Leaping with eagerness like a warrior in mail

  10. ترى الخطَّ والخطِّيَّ سراً وجهرةً

    عَليمَيْنِ من أعدائهِ بالمقَاتِلِذ

    You see his tracing, lines and writer

    Learned in ways to defeat his foes in war

  11. فتحْتَ حشايا العبقريَّةِ والدُّجى

    طعينٌ كما تحت الضُّحى والقساطل

    You opened up the dark recesses of genius and gloom

    A piercing light at dawn and beneath arcades

  12. ونِعْمَ مُناخُ الطَّارقينَ عشيَّةً

    إذا ما المشاتي جعجعتْ بالرَّواحلِ

    And fair the night-halting place of raiders

    When the watchfires blazed with leaping flames

  13. هُنالِكُمُ تاجُ المُلوكِ كأنَّهُ

    أبٌ حَدِبٌ من بِرِّهِ والفواضل

    There your king's crown is like

    A hump-backed father in kindness and bounty

  14. نَوالاً وبِشْراً واعتذاراً وصاحِباً

    كريمَ سجايا النفس عذب الشَّمائل

    Giving and glad tidings, pardon and a noble friend

    Generous of soul, sweet of mien
