1. لمن الخيلُ كأمثالِ السَّعالي

    عادياتٍ تتمطَّى بالرجال

    For whom are the horses like the lofty clouds

    Mares galloping with men

  2. ماعجاتٍ بغَطاريفِ وغىً

    جلبوا الموت بأطراف العوالي

    Startled by the rattling of armor and moaning

    Bringing death on the tips of their forelocks

  3. حَظَرَ الغِمْرُ عليهم دَعَةً

    فأباحوا غارةَ الحيِّ الحِلالِ

    Boredom has forbidden them rest

    So they made raiding the permitted livelihood

  4. لغلامٍ هَتفَ المجدُ به

    فهفا يَفرعُ غايات القِلال

    For a young man glorified by glory

    His banners flutter on the summits

  5. حالفَ الدَّهر بأيْمانِ العُلى

    ليلُفَّنَّ رِعالاً برعالِ

    Time has sworn by the oaths of glory

    To roll up the meadows with meadows

  6. ويعيدُ الصُّبحَ ليلاً بمثارٍ

    من عجاجٍ ونجومٍ من نصال

    And return dawn to night with fruits

    Of screams, and stars of swords

  7. فاتَّقوا وثْبة ليثٍ خادرٍ

    أكلُهُ الموتُ إذا يُدعى نَزالِ

    So beware the leap of a slumbering lion

    Whose food is death when called to battle

  8. ففؤادي من أذى مصركُم

    شارةٌ أودى بها كرُّ النبال

    For my heart from the harm of your dwellings

    Is a witness who has perished from the arrows

  9. كلما أوسعتُ حلمي جاهلاً

    أوسع الجهلُ له فحشَ المقال

    Whenever I widen my patience in ignorance

    Ignorance widens for it the ugliness of speech

  10. كل يوم حسنُ صفحٍ مُطْمِعٌ

    يُشْمتُ الفتك بلين الإِحمال

    Every day the face of a beauty makes me hope

    Jealousy triumphs in the softness of burdens

  11. يا بني الأشعار كفُّوا سَفهاً

    واقْتصروا أنَّ بنا مُجْدَيَ عالِ

    O people of poetry cease your foolishness

    And be content that we have abundant glory

  12. فالقوافي لكمُ مُسترزقٌ

    ومطايا أملي نحو المعالي

    For rhymes are your hired hands

    And my hopes towards goals are my steeds

  13. لكم البُلْغة من مكسبها

    وليَ الحالان من مجدٍ ومالِ

    Eloquence is for you a source of income

    While glory and wealth are for me

  14. أنني مَلْكٌ وأنتم سُوقةٌ

    فات وقت النِّيب تجليح الرئالِ

    That I am a king and you are captains

    The time of reproach for the scout is past

  15. وإذا شاردةٌ فُهْتُ بها

    سبقت مرَّ النُّعامى والشَّمال

    And if a songstress enchants me

    She surpasses the running of ostrich and north wind

  16. توميءُ الأيدي إذا لُحْتُ كما

    أومأتْ غِبَّ صيامٍ لهلال

    Hands gesture when I draw near

    As the crescent signals to the fasting

  17. أنني سلمٌ لمن سالمني

    وفتى الروع لمن رامَ قتالي

    I am a ladder for whoever makes peace with me

    And a gallant lion for whoever desires my battle

  18. عزَّ بأسي أن أرى مضطهداً

    وأبي لي غربُ عزمي أنْ أبالي

    My power honors that I see an oppressed man

    And my soul refuses that I care

  19. دارمٌ جدِّي ومني حاجبٌ

    ولقيطٌ والزَّميع ابن عِقال

    My hands are for protection and from me a eyebrow

    An orphan, a foundling, and Zamaa the son of Iqal

  20. ودفينٌ مُلجيء الجاني إذا

    أسْلمتهُ ذممُ الصيدِ المَوالي

    A shelter for the criminal when

    The pacts of hunting spare him

  21. معشر حازوا المعالي بالظُّبى

    وأذلوا الصعب بالسمر الطوالِ

    O people who won glories with hunting

    And subjugated the difficult with the long lance

  22. كعَموا شاحيةَ الضَّيم وقد

    فغرتْ للشرِّ أفواهُ الليالي

    Like the Protection, and the injustice opened

    To evil, the mouths of nights

  23. واستمر الخطبُ إذا ها هوْابه

    حائراً يخطب في قعر الضَّلال

    And sorrows persisted, there it is confounded

    Confused, lamenting in the depths of misguidance

  24. صُبُرٌ أن هجهج الخطبُ بهم

    بسطُ الأيمانِ غُرانُ المجالي

    Patience, that the laments jabber about them

    The outstretched oaths, the meadows of glories

  25. تشتكي ليلاً وصُبحاً سُمرهمْ

    ثغرُ الصيد ولبَّاتُ المَتالي

    Complaining night and day are their singing girls

    The mouth of the prey and the twisting dunes

  26. دعُ هذاءً ولِعَ القومُ به

    جَلَّ هذا المجدُ عن قيلٍ وقال

    Leave this madness, and the people have indulged in it

    This glory is too lofty for saying and speaking

  27. لا كرىً أو أبعث الخيل ضُحىً

    كالدَّبى زفزفهُ عصفُ الشمال

    No shame, or I will send out the horses at dawn

    Like a torrent roared by the north winds

  28. آخذاً حقّاً لواني زمني

    بمقاديمَ إلى الطعن عِجال

    Taking my right with my predecessors

    With forelegs, quickly into the stab

  29. لا تلمني في شقائي بالعُلى

    رغدُ العيش لربَّاتِ الحجال

    Do not blame me in my misery with glory

    Easy living is for the owners of tents

  30. أنني في المجد أعصي عاذلي

    كظهير الدين في بذل النَّوال

    That I in glory disobey those who blame me

    Like the Aid, in spending gifts

  31. قاتل المَحْل إذا عزَّ الحَيا

    بصدوق الشيم مستن التَّوالي

    The fighter prepared when life was difficult

    With the quiver of virtues, stretching to spend

  32. بسحوحٍ من نَدى راحتهِ

    يغمرُ المعدومَ من غير سُؤالِ

    With a bit of dew's rest

    Flooding the nonexistent without being asked

  33. يلمعُ البشرُ على أرجائه

    لمعانَ البرق في الجَوْنِ الثِّقال

    Humanity shines in its corners

    Like lightning flashes in the heavy clouds

  34. سيف عزٍّ زانهُ رونقهُ

    فهو بالطبع غني عن صِقالِ

    A sword of power its edge adorned it

    Thus by nature without need of sharpening

  35. أسدٌ يقتل بالخوف العدى

    فهو بالزأر غنيٌّ عن صِيال

    A lion who kills fears with terror

    Thus with his roar without need of howling

  36. كلما كفكف من وثبتهِ

    ذهب الخوفُ بألبابِ الرجال

    Whenever he restrains himself from leaping

    Fear departs from the minds of men

  37. فاصلٌ للحكم لا يُجزهُ

    شغبُ الخصْم ولا طولُ الجدال

    A reconciler of conflict not influenced

    By the disputants' defiance or lengthy debate

  38. لو تَلا حجته في مَعْركٍ

    صرع الأبطال من غير نزال

    If he recited his argument in battle

    The heroes would fall without fighting

  39. كرمٌ كالغيث يهمي وَدْقُهُ

    للمفاليس وحلمٌ كالجبالِ

    Generosity like pouring rain whose knocking

    Is for the bankrupt, and patience like mountains

  40. فطلوبُ الرزق يحدو بشمالٍ

    وجهولُ الحي يحدو بثَفالِ

    Seeking provision travels with effort

    While seeking life travels with fatigue

  41. يسهرُ الليل بعيداً صبحهُ

    طاهرُ البردةِ من عيب الفِعالِ

    Staying up the night, far from his morning

    Chaste in his cloak, without sinful deeds

  42. فالمعالي جذلاتٌ بالوصال

    والغواني باكياتٌ للتَّقالي

    For glories are flowers in union

    While sins are weeping in remoteness

  43. وإذا أوجَفَ في طِلبته

    هَدم العيسَ بإدمانِ الكَلالِ

    And if he frowned in requesting

    He destroyed livelihood with grape wine

  44. أينما حلَّ الوزير المُرتجى

    عارضٌ هامٍ سريعُ الإنهمال

    Wherever the hoped for minister lodged

    A lofty pillar, quick to help

  45. وارثٌ للفخر من أشياخهِ

    أخذ بِجالاً عن بِجال

    An heir of glory from his elders

    Taking without payment from without payment
