1. أقولُ لِمنْطيقٍ من الحِيِّ أفْوَهٍ

    بليغٍ إذا ما ألْسُنُ اللُّدِّ كَلَّتِ

    I say to one whose eloquent speech flows

    When the tongues of contention are tied,

  2. زعيمٍ بغُرْمِ الفوْت غير مُجمجمٍ

    إذا لفظةٌ عن مسلك القولِ ضَلَّتِ

    A leader not bothered by missing out,

    If an errant word escapes his discourse,

  3. تحمَّلْ رعاكَ اللّهُ شُكْراً إلى الذي

    به عظُمَتْ حالُ المعالي وجَلَّتِ

    May God reward you, who by his grace

    The state of glory has been exalted,

  4. إلى عضد الدين الجوادِ ابن عِزِّهِ

    نجارٌ كشمس الصُّبح حين تجلَّتِ

    To the pillar of faith, the generous son of his honor,

    A carpenter like the morning sun when it rises,

  5. فثمَّ الندى الهامي إذا السُّحب أخلفت

    وثمَّ الحمى الحامي إذا البيض ذلَّتِ

    There lies the dew of care when clouds withdraw

    And there lies protective zeal when eggs hatch,

  6. حييٌّ جريءٌ في العُفاةِ وفي العِدى

    إذا عِدَّةٌ زادتْ لفضليْهِ قَلَّتِ

    Lively and bold whether barefoot or shod

    When his superior qualities lessen his weapons,

  7. فيحتقرُ الجمَّينِ دَثْراً وجحْفلاً

    عطاءً وإِقْداماً إذا الخيلُ وَلَّتِ

    He looks down on both horse and foot

    In generosity and courage when horses take flight,

  8. يُسنُّ قميصاهُ على شامخِ الذُّرى

    إذا ما الحُبى من سورة الخطب حُلَّتِ

    He wraps himself in a cloak like the towering height

    When the text of a sermon is free of restraint,

  9. فلا زالَ فَرَّاعاً لكلِّ مُنيفَةٍ

    من المجد لو طارتْ بها الريح زَلَّتِ

    Never ceasing to watch for every glory,

    Even if the winds were to carry it away.
