كُفي مقالك عن لومي وتَفْنيدي
صبابتي بالعُلى لا الخُرَّدِ الغِيدِ
Your reproach and censure of me are enough,
My youth is spent in glory, not in idle play.
أطَلْت حتى حسبت المجد منقصةً
كلا ولو أنه حتَفُ المماجيدِ
I have persevered till glory seemed diminished,
No, even if the mighty fall to their doom.
لما رأيتِ غَراماً جَلَّ عن عَذَلٍ
حسبتِه بهوى الحُسَّانةِ الرُّودِ
When you saw passionate love, high above blame,
You thought it was a young girl’s foolish infatuation.
لا والرَّواقصِ بالأنْساعِ يَبْعثها
زجرُ الحُداةِ بإنشادٍ وتغريدِ
No, and as for the dancing girls rhythmically swaying,
It is the singers’ chorus that inspires their movements.
إذا ونين من الأرقال واضْطمرتْ
من اللُّغوب خلطْن البيدَ بالبيدِ
When they moan from the shackles and writhe
Confused by ecstasy, they mix together.
لُغامهنَّ وما ينضحن من عَلَقٍ
غِسْل الأزمَّة أو صبغُ الجلاميدِ
Their flirtations and the juices they exude
Are like washing filth or dyeing clothes.
يحملن شُعثاً على الأكوار تحسبهم
أزِمَّةَ العيسِ منهمٍّ وتَسْهيدِ
They carry dishevelled hair over their breasts, so you would think them
A troop of ram soldiers charging in attack.
ما حنَّ قلبي إلى الحسناء من علقٍ
لكنني بالمعالي جِدُّ مَعْمودِ
My heart is not inclined towards a beautiful woman through lust,
But I am steadfast in pursuing noble goals.
صبابتي دون عِقْدٍ زانهُ عُنُقٌ
إلى لواءٍ أمامَ الجيش معقودِ
My youth, though without restraint, is adorned by a neck
Raised like a banner before the marching army.
أميسُ تِيهاً على الأحياءِ كلِّهِمُ
علماً بأنَّ نظيري غيرُ موجودِ
I wander perplexed among all the settlements,
Knowing that none can equal me.
كيف الإجادةُ في نظمٍ وقافيةٍ
عن خاطرٍ بصروف الدهر مكدود
How can I excel in verse and rhyme
When my mind is wearied by the world’s vicissitudes?
كم قد قريت هَنيَّ العزْم نازلةً
والخطب يُجلب في ساحاتِ رعديد
How often have I seen resolve humbled,
And glory overturned in the battlefields.
تَبَصَّرُوها مِراحاً في أعِنَّتِها
يجفن ما بين مقتولٍ ومطرودِ
They observe it slyly with the corners of their eyes,
Blinking between the slain and the outcast.
تكرُّ ف ليلةٍ ليْلاءَ من رَهَجٍ
على نجيعٍ لخيل اللهِ مورودِ
They attack a pitch-black night with clamour
Against the horses of Allah in full stampede.
تنزو بحُمْسٍ هفت أضغانهم بهم
فحطموا في التراقي كل أمْلودِ
They plunge in recklessly, crushing the enemy host,
Destroying in the melee every trained warrior,
كأنَّ فرْط توالي الطَّعن بينهمُ
ولْغُ العواسل أو معروف محمود
As continuous onslaught of spears amongst them
And the horses’ neighing were worthy deeds.
الواهب الحتف والعيش الخصيب معاً
فالموتُ بالبأسِ والإحياءُ بالجودِ
He who grants both death in battle and a good life
So death comes through might and life through bounty.
والمُبْتَني شَرفاً ترسو دعائمُهُ
بمحمد السَّعي لا صُمِّ القَراميدِ
The one of noble origin, his foundations are laid
Through Muhammad, striving, not mere vain indulgence.
إنْ أمسك الغيث لم يحبس مكارمه
طولُ المِطالِ ولا خُلْفُ المواعيدِ
If he withholds rain he does not withhold his bounty,
Despite long waiting and delayed promises.
مالٌ يُذالُ وعرضٌ بذْلتهِ
خوضُ الأسنَّةِ في ماءِ اللَّغاديدِ
Wealth that humbles, and honor that
Is diminished by plunging into the depths of vice.
أرقُّ من خُلقِ الصهباء شيمتُهُ
فإن يُهَجْ فهو كاسٍ خُلق جلمودِ
He is more gentle than the temperament of a young doe,
But if aroused he is like a cup of solid rock.
فسخطهُ ورضاهُ حين تخبُره
ماءٌ قَراحٌ ونارٌ ذاتُ أخْدودِ
Both his wrath and pleasure, when you experience them,
Are refreshing water, and fire with burning depths.
شاكي السلاح من الإقدام حِيلتهُ
لَطافةُ الزولِ في صبر الصَّناديدِ
The chief complaint of weapons against his daring
Is the sharpness of Indian steel and studded armor.
فكل مُعضل خطبٍ في رويَّتهِ
حديدُ سابغةٍ في كفِّ داودِ
Every intricate issue, when placed in his judgment,
Is like David’s iron armor and solid grasp.
بنانُه البحرُ والأطراسُ شاهدةٌ
بقذف دُرٍّ على الأطراس منضودِ
His decisive jurisprudence in judicial rulings
Establishes the foundations of Sacred Law, from core to crown.
صوابُ فتْواه في الإحكام مُثبِتةٌ
قواعِدَ الشَّرعِ من أسٍّ وتشييدِ
As if the eloquent proof of his clear expression
Were the melodious warbling of a singing bird.
كأنَّ بُرهانَ مدلولٍ بفوهُ بهِ
عذبُ الفصاحة في ترجيع غِرِّيدِ
I have exceeded the limits of praise, so I turn
To congratulate you on the feast-day I wished you well on the feast.
فضلْت حَدَّ التهاني فانصرفتُ إلى
هُني بك العيد من هُنِّيت بالعيدِ
