وفتيان صدق من تميم تنَاثلوا

دروعهمُ والليل ضافي الوشائعِ

And truthful youths from Tameem proliferated

Their armor and the night brought down the curtains

وقِيذينَ من عرقِ السري وقلوبهم

شدادٌ على مرِّ الخطوب الصَوادع

And spears from the sweat of the secret and their hearts

Are resolute despite the severity of misfortunes

يقودون جُرْداً مضمراتٍ كأنها

كواسرُ عقبانِ الشُريفِ الأباقعِ

They lead a concealed army as if they are

Elite hawks with prestigious white spots

تجارى إلى شعواء إلا السيف عندها

بصادٍ ولا ظامي الرجال بناقِع

Competing towards nobility except the sword they have

A slayer not a protector of men with shields

ضمنتُ لهم مُلك العراق فأوسعوا

ضِرابَ الطُّلى بالمرهفات القواطعِ

I guaranteed them the kingdom of Iraq so they spread

Striking with sharpened swords

وكنتُ إذا ما ساورتني كريهةٌ

برزتُ لها في جحفلٍ من مجاشعِ

And if an annoyance befell me

I would march against it with an army of warriors

فلم أستكن من صرف دهرٍ لحادثٍ

ولا ارتعتُ من وقع الخطوب لرائع

So I did not settle from the vicissitudes of fate

Nor was I frightened by the impact of misfortunes

قدعك ما اسْطَعْتِ الغداةَ فإِنها

صبابةُ مجدٍ لا هوىَ بالبراقِعِ

Force yourself when dawn breaks for it is

The splendor of glory, not vain desires

سَلي غانيات الحيِّ عن مُتخَمِّطٍ

إذا السجف ميطت عن ظباء الأجارع

Ask the singing girls about a scowling drunk

When the eyelids reveal the eyes of the gazelles

وكم زوْرة قابلتُّها بتجنُّبٍ

ومبذولِ وصلٍ رعتُه بالقطائعِ

And how many flirtations I faced with avoidance

And offered connection that I nurtured with severance

وسَكرى من الوجد الدخيل أبحتها

عَفافَ تقيٍّ لا عفاف مُخادعِ

And an intoxication of forbidden passion I restrained

With the chastity of the devout, not the deceitful

إذا المرءُ لم يعتدَّ إلا لصَبْوةٍ

أتاهُ الردى ما بين ناءٍ وقاطعِ

If man only aspires to youthfulness

He will be met with humiliation between rise and fall

وإنْ هو لم يجهدْ إلى العزِّ نفسه

تحمَّل أَوْقَ الذلِّ في زيِّ وادعِ

And if he does not strive for honor himself

He will bear the burden of humiliation in loss and misery

أبي اللهُ إلا وثْبةً مُضريَّةً

تُبيحُ المواضي من دماءِ الأخادعِ

May God only allow a deadly leap

That makes lawful the meadows with the blood of the deceivers

تعمُّ الفضا من أدْكن البُرْد قاتمٍ

وتكسو الثَّرى من أحمر اللون ناصع

Spreading through the gloomiest darkness

And covering the ground in brightest red

فلا تاجَ إلا وهو في رُسْغ سابحٍ

ولا رأس إلا وهو في كفِّ قاطعِ

So no crown except swimming in an amputated wrist

No head except in the hand of a severer

إذا ما حَموا أرواحهم بدروعِهم

أبحْنا حِماها بالرماح الشَّوارعِ

When they shield their souls with their armor

We unleash its protection with stabbing spears

وإنْ ناجَزونا بالطِّعان سفاهةً

أبحْنا حِماها بالرماح الشَّوارعِ

And if they confront us with foolish stabbing

We unleash its protection with stabbing spears

وإنْ ناجَزونا بالطَّعان سفاهةً

أعدناهم بالرق بعض البضائع

We return them with chains, some commodities

إِلامَ أذودُ النفس عما تَرومهُ

ذيادَ المطايا عن عِذابِ المشارعِ

Why should I restrain the soul from what it covets

The pacing of the steeds from the torment of the deserts

فإنْ أنا لم أَخبطْ لها الوعرَ عاسفاً

بإكراهها بين السُّرى والوقائعِ

For if I did not plow through its ruggedness violently

Driving it between the treks and tribulations

فهمي من فرط الكآبة قاتلي

وعزمي من حرِّ البسالة باخعي

Then my worry would kill me from the excess sorrow

And my determination scorch me from the heat of courage

بدا لأصحابي غمامٌ كما بدتْ

أعيَلامُ رضْوى للمُجدِّ المتابِع

There appeared to my friends a cloud as there appeared

The standards of glory to the continuous succession

تعرَّضَ نجدياً كأنَّ وميضَهُ

سيوفٌ جلاها صاقلٌ غِبَّ طابعِ

Heading purposefully as if its lightning

Were polished swords made brilliant by a sharpener

كأنَّ العِشارَ المُثْقلات أجاءَها

مخاضٌ فجاءت بين موفٍ وواضع

As if the pregnant clouds were brought forth

By the pangs of labor amidst torrents and downpour

فما زعزعتهُ الريحُ حتى تصادمت

على الأكم أعناقُ السيولِ الدوافع

So the wind did not shake it before they clashed

Upon the curves, the necks of the surging floods

فآضتْ له البيداءُ يَمّاً وبُدِّلتْ

يرابيعُ ذاك المُنحنى بالضفَّادعِ

So the desert opened up springs for it and changed

The flat lands into croaking frogs

فلا موضعٌ إلا مُخيضُ ركابهِ

ولا واضعٌ إلا فُويْقَ المناقِعِ

So no place except a mount for its riders

And no position except the disturbance of swamps

فقال خبيرُ القوم عامٌ بغبطةٍ

نديُّ الثرى والجوِّ غضُّ المراتعِ

So the experienced man of the people said knowingly

Pure of earth and air, green of pasture

فقلتُ لأنْدى منه لو تعلمونَهُ

أناملُ نوشَرْوان تهمي لقانعِ

So I said to the most melodious of them, if you only knew him

The fingers of Nushirwan reach out to the content

سحائبُ تَمْريها العُفاةُ فيَغتدي

على القوم منها هامعٌ إِثرَ هامعٍ

His clouds the sinful wander through so there descends upon

The people from it consecutive strikes

صدوقُ الحيا للشَّائمينَ الْتماعهُ

إذا كذبتْ غرُّ البروق اللَّوامعِ

Truthful companion to the blamers, his gathering with them

When the deceitful lightning of meteors lies

يُضيءُ بها الَّلأواء أَبْلَجُ دأبُهُ

بناءُ المعالي واصطناع المصانعِ

He illuminates the gloom, his habit ever glorious

Is to build greatness and fabricate treasures

فتى الحيِّ أما دارهُ فَلِلاجيءٍ

شريدٍ وأمَّا زادهُ فَلجائعِ

A man of life, his home is for the desperate

Wanderer and his provision for the hungry

سليمُ دواعي الصدر مستهطل الندى

قشيبُ رداءِ الحلم عَفُّ المسامعِ

Safe from impulses of the heart, long-lasting indew

Dignified garb of forbearance, guarded hearing

ينالُ خطيرَ المجد في زيِّ خاملٍ

ويعلو العُلى في حِلْيةِ المُتواضعِ

He attains the feat of glory in humble attire

And ascends the height in the dress of humility

يَخيلُ بمْراقٍ من البشرِ كلما

ألاحَ أَضاءَتْ مظلماتُ المطامعِ

He seems by pure human nature whenever

He appears, to illuminate the darkness of ambitions

ويحتقرُ الوفْرَ الجزيلَ وأنَّهُ

لبَاذِلهُ والعامُ يَبْسُ المَراتعِ

And he scorns abundant wealth even though it is

Free to him while the people's pasture is barren

إذا احتبت الغلب الرقاب وجاذبت

رادءَ العُلى والمجد أيدي المجامعِ

When the necks are conquered by force and pulled

The mantle of heights and glory by grasping hands

أُقِرَّ لهُ بالسبقِ غيرَ مُنازعٍ

وأُلْقِي عنانُ الفخرِ غير مُنازعِ

It is admitted to him without any rivalry

And the rein of pride is released without any contest

كأَنَّ على أخلاقه من بَنانهِ

ندىً حملتهُ من بساطِ الأشاجعِ

As if his manners carry from his essence

A dew that descends from the meadows of perennial trees

يُغيرُ عليه الحلمُ غير مُخذَّل

ويمضي به الإِقِدامُ غيرَ مُراجعِ

Patience sheaths him without being weakened

And courage takes him forth without looking back

ويهتزُّ للمعروف عندَ انْتدائه

تأَوُّدَ غُصنِ البانَة المُتتابعِ

And affection for kindness tremors through him

Like the swaying of the supple boughs in succession

له حليةُ الشَّهم الزميعِ مع العدى

وفي الله كاسٍ ثوبَ خَشْيان خاشع

He has the bearing of noble pride with hostility

And in God a revering, humble heart

ودودٌ لو أنَّ الهجرَ زادٌ لساغبٍ

لألْفيتهُ مُستهتراً بالمجاوعِ

Affectionate, if estrangement were provision for one seeking

I would befriend him heedless of deprivation

طوى شرف الدين السًّرى لمحلقٍ

من المجدِ مردٍ بالسُّرى والنزائع

The honor of religion folded the hidden

From the glory, fallen to misfortune and defeat

فغادر طُلاب المعالي رذيَّةً

لإِدراكهِ ما بني مُعْيٍ وظالعِ

So he left the seekers of glory as prey

To attain what was built between purpose and ascent

هنيئاً لك النَّجْلُ الكريم فإنُه

ضياءُ شهابٍ نوَّر الأفْقَ ساطعِ

Congratulations to you for the generous progeny for it is

The illumination of a meteors that brightened the horizon

عبدتَ وحاولت المزيدَ من التُّقى

فجئتَ بعبدٍ مُسلمِ الدين طائعِ

You worshipped and sought more piety

So you came with a submitted, obedient servant

فأما التي أنْ نلْتها كنت رافِعاً

لها وسَناها منك ليسَ برافعِ

As for what you attained, you were raising it

And made it forget you, not its raiser

فتهنئتي للناسِ فيها لأنَّهم

بك اعتصموا من مُردياتِ المصارع

So my congratulations to the people through it

For through you they took refuge from deadly strikes
