1. حَباهُ إِلهُ العرش جوداً ونجْدةً

    يودُّهُما حدُّ الظُّبى وندى القطْرِ

    The Lord of the Throne endowed him with generosity and aid,

    Loved by the zebras and the dew of rain.

  2. وأبيضَ وضَّاحاً سنى قَسَماتِهِ

    يعود له الليل الدَّجوجيُّ كالظُّهر

    With a face bright as the dawn, dividing its beauty,

    The dark night returns to him like the mid-day sun.

  3. فقامَ بشُكْر اللّه عن كُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ

    بأمثالها بالخير يبقى مع الشُّكْرِ

    So he thanked Allah for every blessing,

    With their like in good he remains with gratitude.

  4. حَمى وقَرى جيرانَهُ وضُيوفَه

    فباتوا بخيرٍ من نوالٍ ومن نَصْرِ

    He protected his neighbors and guests,

    So they spent the night in well-being, gain, and victory.

  5. وجادَ زكاةً عن صباحَةِ وجْههِ

    على مُعْتفيه بالبشاشةِ والبِشْرِ

    And he gave alms with the brightness of his face,

    To the needy with joy and good tidings.

  6. فدلَّتْ على المعروف منه طَلاقَةٌ

    كما دلَّ أعْناق العِطاش سنى الفجر

    Thus his eloquence indicated his kindness,

    As did the necks of the thirsty the morning light.

  7. أبو جعفرٍ أربى على جعفرِ النَّدى

    وإنْ كان مشهور المكارمِ والذِّكرِ

    Father of Ja'far, who raised Ja'far of bounty,

    Though famed for his virtues and mention.

  8. طَمَتْ ثروةٌ بالبرمكيِّ فسهَّلت

    نوالاً وجاد الخِنْدِفيُّ ولم يُثْرِ

    Wealth ceased in Barmki so he eased

    Giving and the noble Khundufi did not hoard.

  9. فأوْلاهُما بالمدح من كان مُؤثِراً

    ببُلْغَتهِ أهل الخصاصة والفَقْرِ

    So he deserved praise from the grateful,

    With his eloquence the elite and destitute.

  10. فما واهِبٌ أبْقَتْ يداهُ ذخيرةً

    كمن ما له غير المحامد من ذُخْرِ

    No giver maintained provision,

    Like one whose only possessions are praise and treasure.

  11. أبى العارضُ الثَّجَّاجُ حبس بقيَّةٍ

    ولُؤمُ الرَّكايا يحبس الماء في القعر

    The tall, slender man refused to withhold remnants,

    And the shame of bowls withholds water in the depth.

  12. فيا لك من طوْدٍ رفيعٍ وعارضٍ

    هَموعٍ وسيفٍ لا يَملُّ من الهبر

    O you tall, lofty pillar,

    Sword that never tires of unsheathing.

  13. إذا عقر الأبالَ والنِّيبَ في الوغى

    وفي السلم كانت طعمة الضيف والنَّسْرِ

    When he cripples steeds and warriors in battle,

    And in peace he is the prey of guest and eagle.

  14. تُلاقيه نشْوانَ الشَّمائلِ والعُلى

    فلولا تُقاه قلت نشوانُ من خمرِ

    You meet him with the traits and virtues of nobles,

    If not for your sanity, I'd say you meet him drunk.

  15. حبيس الخُطى عن كل عارٍ مُدنسٍ

    ولكن جوادٌ مُحرزٌ قصب الفخر

    Restrained in step from all disgrace,

    Though a steed secured, a cane of pride.

  16. فليت السَّراةَ الأقدمين بني النُّهى

    وجوهَ المعالي في الفلاة وفي المِصْر

    If only the ancient nobles of resolve

    And the faces of glory in the wilderness and Egypt

  17. ترى الشِّبل ليثاً والطَّليعة جحفلاً

    وجَمَّةَ وادٍ أصبحت لُجَّة البحر

    Could see the cub a lion and the vanguard an army,

    And a river bend that became the expanse of the sea.

  18. أقرُّوا إذاً طُرَّاً بتفضيلِ سابقٍ

    جموحٍ إلى الغايات مُلتهب الحُضر

    They would acknowledge the superiority of one exceeding,

    Galloping to the farthest goals, heated in zeal.

  19. أخِيرٌ ولكن أوَّلٌ في فَخارِهِ

    ولا فخر للمفضول في قِدَم العصرِ

    Last but first in his pride,

    No pride for the surpassed in the era’s span.

  20. وزيرٌ يَدُقُّ السَّمْهريَّ بمزبرٍ

    ويهزمُ أسطار الكتائب بالسَّطرِ

    A minister who pounds the emerald with chisel

    And defeats the lines of battalions with prose.

  21. تَساوي بني الأشْعار نظْماً وإنما

    تفاوتُهم في الفضل والصيت والقدْر

    The poems of people are equal in prosody, but

    Differ in merit, fame, and worth.

  22. وما شُعَراءُ الناس إِلاَّ مَعادِنٌ

    وما كل أرضٍ معدنُ الذهب التِّبر

    The poets of mankind are but mines,

    Not every land is a mine of pure gold.
