1. فضلتْ التهاني بالمراتب والعُلى

    فكان فصيح الحي بالصمت أجدرا

    You chose to give greetings and rank of high stature,

    So the eloquent among the living were better off remaining silent.

  2. وجاوزتَ مقدارَ المديحِ فكلَّما

    أراد لساني ذكر وصفك قصَّرا

    You surpassed the extent of praise, so whenever

    My tongue tried to mention and describe you, it fell short.

  3. وطبْت ثناءً في المجامع ذائعاً

    كما طبت أصلاً في النِّجار وعنصرا

    You pronounced praise in gatherings, broadcasting it,

    Just as you pronounced the essence and principle originally.

  4. تعيد الفجاج الغُبْر خضراً من الندى

    وترجع ضوء الصُّبح بالبأس أغبرا

    You return dusty gloom to fresh verdure,

    And bring back the dawn’s radiance through force made dusty.

  5. وتسفر حيث الخطب ليل معسعس

    فتثنيه رأداً من صباحٍ مُشَهَّرا

    You make dawn appear where calamity’s night was pitch black,

    Then bend it to become a gentle morning, reddened.

  6. تودُّ الرزان الشم حلم ابن خالدٍ

    إذا القرم من حمل العظيمة جرجرا

    The steadfast desire your wise forbearance, like the clemency of Ibn Khalid,

    When the valorous strain to carry the greatest burden.

  7. إذا أجلبت ضوضاء خطبٍ بسمعه

    رأيت شروْري والنسيم إذا جرى

    When the clamor of speeches deafens his hearing,

    You see my trepidation and the breeze when it flows

  8. سليم دواعي الصدر سهل رجوعه

    أشدُّ هوىً بالعفو إذ كان أقْدرا

    At peace, the impulses of my heart calmly returning,

    More passionate for pardon since you are most capable.

  9. فتىً لا يُريد العزَّ إلا لنجدةٍ

    ولا المالَ إلا للرَّغائب والقِرى

    A noble knight who seeks glory only to rescue

    And wealth only for desires and households.

  10. ومُعتكر النَّقعين جَمٍّ رماحُه

    إذا حلَّ ظُهراً بالعراءِ تديْجَرا

    Brandishing spears, straining steeds frothing at the mouth

    When they gallop into the open plain with rattling armor.

  11. شديدِ ازدحام الدَّارعينَ كأنهُ

    غواربُ تيَّارٍ طَما فتحدَّرا

    The thronging of warriors so dense, as if they are

    Raging torrents cascading headlong.

  12. غدا مالئْ الألباب ذُعراً وهيبةً

    وقلبَ الموامي ذُبَّلاً وسَنَوَّرا

    Tomorrow they will fill minds with fear and awe,

    And turn valleys into withered desolation.

  13. وخاض نهاءَ القاع حتى حسبْتها

    خَباراً قُطارياً ووعْثاً مُدَعْثَرا

    They penetrated the valley’s depths until I thought them

    To be locust swarms chaotically scattered about.

  14. وفرَّ له الوحش القصيُّ مخافةً

    من الطَّرد حتى أخل الجنُّ عبقرا

    The wildlife fled them in terror

    Of being chased away, so that even jinn deserted the valley.

  15. كأنَّ ظُباهُ في متونِ عجاجةٍ

    بوارق يقتدن السَّحاب الكَنَهْورا

    As if their cavalry in ships’ holds

    Were clouds, vultures emulating the swooping flight.

  16. فغادرتهُ أمَّا هزيماً مُنَفَّراً

    قتيلَ الموامي أو عبيطاً مُسنَّرا

    Then I left them, whether routed in retreat

    Or slain, their corpses strewn about.
