1. لقد علمت زوراء دجلة أنني

    وقورٌ إذا خفَّتْ حلوم العشائر

    I knew that the falsity of the Tigris

    And my dignity when the desires of men have diminished

  2. وأني قتولٌ بالأناة إذا نبتْ

    صدور العوالي والسيوف البواتر

    And that I am violent with patience when

    The great men and the sharp swords sprouted

  3. وأني غفورٌ للسفيه وآخذُ النَّبي

    هِ ومنَّاع النزيل المجاورِ

    And that I forgive the foolish and take the prophet

    As an example and shelter the neighbor

  4. أعير الجهولَ الغِرَّ لينة راحم

    وأضرب في رأس الكميِّ المغامر

    I turn gently to the ignorant aggressor

    And strike the head of the transgressor

  5. وأصدف عن هزل المقال ترفُّعاً

    بمجديَ عن مؤذٍ لجديِّ ضائر

    And avoid joking speech haughtily

    For my glory, from one who harms my sanctity

  6. وكم من سفيه الرأي والقول أجلبت

    فواحشُه اجلاب هوجاءَ داعرِ

    And how many foolish in opinion and speech

    Whose obscenities repelled the roaring lion

  7. يقول لي الفحشاء كما أجيبه

    فيغدو بقولي في عِداد النَّظائر

    Who says obscenities to me as I answer him

    So he becomes equal to me in speech

  8. كررت عليه الحلمَ حتى تبدلت

    جرائمه من خلجةٍ بالمعاذر

    I repeated forgiveness to him until his crimes changed

    From turbulence to excuses

  9. وحاجة مصدورٍ سهرت لنُجحها

    وقد نام عنها ربُّها غير ساهر

    The needy kept me up at night to help him

    While his Lord slept not watching over him

  10. قطعت لها ليْليْ سُرىً ورويَّةً

    فجاءت وما نَمَّ الصباحُ بجاشِر

    I travelled by night selflessly

    So it came while the morning had no announcer

  11. إذا شطَّ مأمولٌ أروم دراكه

    ركبت متون العزم قبل الأباعر

    When a hope was high I intended to attain it

    Riding the mounts of determination before the cavalry

  12. وإني لمشتاقٌ إلى ذي حفيظةٍ

    شديد مضاءِ البأس مُرِّ البوادر

    And I long for one with strong preservation

    Severe in battle, bitter in the first strikes

  13. متى سمته بالقول نصراً جرت به

    مقاولُ أغمادٍ فصاحُ المجازر

    When I point him to victory in word he charges

    With the edges of swords so slaughter prevails

  14. إذا أغمد البيض الصوارم في الطلى

    وحطَّم مَّران الوغى في الحناجر

    When he sheaths the white swords in blood

    And crushes the necks in throats

  15. تخيَّر مني جالب الشر في العِدا

    تَخيُّرَ معزٍ لا تخير زاجر

    Let the evildoer choose me for vengeance

    Choose a goat not a prohibitor

  16. فيفتك فيمن رام ظُلمي بأول

    ويسأل عما جَرَّ حربي بآخر

    So he takes vengeance on those who wronged me first

    And asks about those who drew my war last

  17. يكون نصيري عند إدراكي العُلى

    ولن تُدرك العلياءُ إلا بناصر

    He will be my supporter when I attain the heights

    And the heights are not attained but with helpers

  18. شأوت بني الزوراء مجداً فأبغضوا

    وهل يُضمر المقهور حباً لقاهر

    I have irked the people of Zuraa with glory so they hated me

    Does the subdued conceal love for the conqueror?

  19. وأنكر جِدي هزلهم فتنافروا

    نفارُ المواشي عن مقام القساور

    And my sanctity disliked their foolishness so they turned away

    The turning away of cattle from the dwellings of lions

  20. وكيف يقيم الليل والشمس برزةٌ

    ويدنو حمامُ الأيك من وكر كاسر

    And how can the night stay while the sun is shining

    And the doves of thickets near the dens of hyenas

  21. ولو عقلوا كان الفخارُ بهمَّتي

    على المدن أحرى بالنُّهى والبصائر

    Had they been reasonable, pottery by my will

    Would have been worthier of gifts and insights

  22. ولكن أضاعوني وفي الله حافظٌ

    وليس تغطي الشمس راحةُ ساتر

    But they lost me while God is the Keeper

    The sun’s rest covers not the hand of the protector

  23. فلو لحظوا عن أعين الحق همَّتي

    رأوا ملك الآمال في زيِّ شاعرِ

    Had they glanced away from the eyes of truth to my will

    They’d have seen the king of hopes in the garb of a poet

  24. أبى السيف إلا فتكةً دارميةً

    تروي صداه من دماء المساعر

    The sword refused but mortal blows

    Whose echoes are watered with blood of veins

  25. وخيلاً تَعادى بالكماة كأنها

    نسور الموامي أو ذئابُ القراقر

    And horses that compete with destruction as though they are

    The eagles of shrublands or the wolves of carrion

  26. يخف بها غِمر إلى كل ناكثٍ

    ويجذبها ضغن إلى كل غادر

    Therewith the injustice to every betrayer lessens

    And it pulls to every deserter

  27. تمارحُ تحت الدارعين مراحَها

    على كلأٍ من منبت الحَزْن ناضر

    Frolicking under the armored warriors are its joys

    On the meadows of griefs blooming

  28. إذا قيل هذا الروع أغنى نشاطها

    بقرع العوالي عن جلاد المخاصر

    When it was said this terror revived its vigor

    With the striking of arms, not the skinning of the scratcher

  29. عليهن منا كل لافظ جُنَّةٍ

    ترفَّع أن يلقى الردى غير حاسر

    Upon them from me is every gentle expression

    Too lofty to meet with meanness without declining

  30. أخي ضَمَدِ ضاق الفؤاد بهمهِ

    فأوسع ضرباً هاتكاً للمغافر

    My brother Damd, the heart tightened with worries

    So relieve with a gift, a pardoner

  31. هجرنا إلى آمالنا كل مطعمٍ

    فلم ترَ إلا ضامراً فوق ضامر

    We deserted every unseemly source for our hopes

    And you did not see except barren over barren

  32. بيوم وغىً تعمي العجاجةُ شمسه

    وتُطلعُ زهر الذابلات الشَّواجر

    A day of battle whose violence darkens its sun

    And the blossoms of the withered blaze

  33. جبهناهم فيه بطعنٍ كأنه

    خروقُ العَزالي واستنانُ المواطر

    We brought them down therein with a stab as though it were

    The slashing of the noble and the striking of the wet nurse

  34. وسُقناهم تحت العجاج كأنما

    نخبُّ بغزلان الصَّريم النوافر

    And we led them under the violence as though

    Plucking the roes of the bounding long-striding

  35. فلو لا ادِّكارٌ من أناة ابن خالدٍ

    لما كفَّ عن ضرب الطُّلى غرب باتر

    Had it not been for the patience of Ibn Khalid's son

    He would not have stopped striking bloody batterings

  36. فتى سنَّ نهج الحلم من غير ذلةً

    لكل حديد في الخصام مساور

    A young man who set the course of patience without humiliation

    To every quarrel in dispute, reconciling

  37. وأسبل ماء الجود حتى تزاورتْ

    عيون بني الَّلأواءِ عن شيم ماطر

    And let down the water of generosity until

    The eyes of the tribes visited without a rainy downpour

  38. مطاعٌ بلا فتك ولم تشهر الظُّبى

    لحب الردى بل لامتثال الأوامرِ

    Obeyed without killing, and the hyenas were not unleashed

    For love of evil, but for obedience to orders

  39. تَوَهَّمُ ريَّا عرضه نشر روضةٍ

    أصاب الحيا من صيِّباتِ البواكر

    He imagined displaying his integrity spreading a meadow

    Which mortality’s arrows had struck

  40. إذا ما سعى للمال قومٌ فسعيه

    بناءُ المعالي واكتساب المفاخر

    When a people set out to gain wealth, their efforts are

    Building glory and gaining pride

  41. حمي إذا خيف الردى بات جاره

    على عِظم الأعداء غير محاذر

    He protected his neighbor when evil was feared

    Not fearing the greatness of enemies

  42. وذي فرق ضاقت به الأرض خيفة

    كما ضاق أُحبولُ الملا باليعافر

    And one whose distinction the land tightened around in fear

    As the passes tighten around the refugee

  43. تدافع لا الحصن المنيع بآمنٍ

    عليه ولا الليل البهيم بساتر

    No safe fortress protects a secure man

    Nor does the ominous night with its veils

  44. إذا قال هذا معقل قذفت به

    نواجِيه قذف الراشقات العوابر

    When he says this is an impenetrable refuge

    I hurl at its peaks, hurling of stormy clouds

  45. يودُّ لو أنَّ الأمر في عربيةٍ

    فتحميه أطناب البيوت الدواسر

    He wishes the matter was in a commendable woman

    Who would protect him with the tents' curtains

  46. رمى بالحريم الطاهريِّ رحاله

    إلى سالمٍ من شائب العيب طاهر

    He tossed his pure, immaculate women

    To safety, pure of any blemish

  47. فباشر أمناً لا أداءُ عُهودهِ

    بزورٍ ولا أيمانهُ بفواجر

    Receive safety without fulfilling pledges

    With lies or oaths with immoralities

  48. تميل بعطفيه القوافي كم مشى

    دبيب الحميَّا في عظام المُعاقر

    With my sides the rhymes lean as walked

    The gait of the ink in the bones of the carved

  49. إذا فجر المُداح في مدح غيره

    فمادحُه في مدحه غير فاجر

    When the eulogizer composes for other than him

    His eulogizer composing his eulogy is no debaucher

  50. تتيه به الدنيا فخاراً وينثني

    بما ناله من مجد غير فاخر

    The world goes astray with him boastfully and he walks bent

    With what he attained of undeserved glory

  51. عليمٌ بإصلاح الورى

    تحيل رقى ألفاظه الضغن خلَّة

    Knowledgeable in reforming the land

    His words' magic turns animosity into a peace-maker

  52. ويغدو بها لموتور سلماً لواتر

    تُناخ مطايا مُعتفيه بماجدٍ

    And it goes therewith to the sullen as a ladder of treaties

    His trusting steeds stand tied with glorious deeds

  53. رفيع عمادِ البيت جَمِّ المآثر

    إذا انتجعوه جاد صوب يمينه

    Raising the house's pillar, fulfilling glories

    When they come to him he gives from his right

  54. بمغدودقٍ يُنسى انهمال الهوامر

    لهم منه رفْداً وجهه ونواله

    A stored abundance making commands forgotten

    They have sustenance and favors from him

  55. فلم يُرَ إِلا باذلاً غِبَّ باشِر

    هناك قدوم الصَّوم والعيد إذ هما

    So none saw but a giver, duty to the deserving obscured

    There, the arrival of fasting and celebration, while both

  56. شريكاكَ في تقواهما والبشائر

    أمنتُ صروف الحادثات وعصمتي

    Are your partners in piety and good tidings

    I felt secure from the turns of events and my protection

  57. بردءٍ شديدٍ من يديك مُظاهري

    وأخرست ضوضاء الخطوب وربما

    In your strong cloak that guarded me

    And silenced the clamor of afflictions, though perhaps

  58. رمتني لو لم تحمني بالفواقر

    أيادي الفتى في الناس ذخرٌ وأنها

    It would have thrown me had you not armed me

    The hands of the young man are a treasure among the people and they

  59. بودِّ الفصيح الحرِّ خيرُ الذخائر

    وما أنا للنعماء منك بجاحدٍ

    Are for the eloquent and noble the best treasures

    I am not to your blessings an ingrate

  60. ولا لأياديك الجسام بكافر

    وحاشاك يومأً أن تُرى غير مُنعم

    Nor to your great hands a disbeliever

    Far from you one day to be seen unbenevolent

  61. وحاشاي حيناً أن أرى غير شاكر

    Far from me one moment to be seen ungrateful
