1. خذ ما تشاء من الأيام أو فذر

    نلت العلى وبنو الآمال في سهر

    Take what you want of the days or abandon them

    You attained the heights while the hopeful slept

  2. كم غالَ فضلك مغروراً بمقولة

    لمَّا نحاه وشرُّ الحتف في الغَرر

    How often the arrogant man was deceived by the saying

    When fate betrayed him, evil lurks in deceit

  3. لا يحفظنك حسادٌ زعانفةٌ

    صبُرٌ على الضيم وُرَّادٌ على الكدر

    No envious slanderers can protect you

    Patience over wrong and planning against distress

  4. مُدفعون عن الأبواب تقذفهم

    أيدي المراسم قذف السَّهم بالوتر

    Rejected from the doors, their hands

    Cast them like an arrow flung from the bowstring

  5. لهم إلى النائل المنزور حقحقةٌ

    وفي طِلاب المعالي هجمةُ الحُمُر

    For those seeking favors, they clamor

    And for the seekers of glory, the onslaught of the red camels

  6. أن شاركوني في قولٍ فلا عجبٌ

    ما حال إِبليس في التخليد كالخِيرَ

    It's no wonder they share with me in speech

    What is the fate of Satan in eternity like the good?

  7. أنازعُ الملك الطاغي وسادته

    ويحجبون عن التسليم والنَّظَر

    I contend with the tyrannical king and his chieftains

    And they withhold submission and consideration

  8. كأنني باذلٌ ما جئت أطلبه

    عند الملوك لفرط العز والخطر

    It's as if I'm a spender, seeking what

    I came for from the kings, despite power and danger

  9. شيدَ البُنى وكلاب الحي نابحةٌ

    لو كان ذلك زأر الأسْدِ لم يَضِرِ

    He built structures while the street dogs bark

    If that were the roar of a lion, it wouldn't matter

  10. من كل مشتملٍ بالذُل مُضطهدٍ

    يُرمِّقُ العيش بين الذل والحَصَر

    From every oppressed and humiliated soul

    Who scrapes together a living between humiliation and confinement

  11. أَضلَّه نور فضلي عن مقاصده

    وربما ضلَّ ساري الليل بالقمر

    My excellence has led him astray from his goals

    And sometimes the course of night misleads the moon

  12. شكوا شراسَة أخلاقي فقلتُ لهم

    خشونة البيض مازتها عن السُّمرُ

    They complained of the harshness of my manners, so I told them

    The sharpness of the white swords does not detract from their edge

  13. لا تحسبوا شرس الأخلاق منقصةً

    فمُزَّة الخمر أشهاها إلى البشر

    Do not consider harsh manners a shortcoming

    For the excellence of wine is its potency for mortals

  14. كفى حسودي جهلاً أنه رجلٌ

    مُعاندٌ لقضاء اللهِ والقَدَرِ

    Enough, my ignorant foe, for he is a man

    Hostile to the decree of God and fate

  15. إني اصطفيت حساماً راق رونقهُ

    أغنى شباه عن الصَّمصامة الذَّكر

    I have chosen a refined and elegant sword

    Wealthy enough to make scabbards forgettable

  16. طبعته من أناةٍ غير خاذلةٍ

    وجوهرية حلمٍ رائع الأثر

    I forged it from steadfast composure

    And the essence of forbearing wisdom

  17. فجاء حيث سيوف الهند نابيةٌ

    طَبَّ الغِرار بقتل العاضِه الأشِر

    So it came where the Indian swords gleam

    Satisfying the scabbard by killing the vicious

  18. لا شيء أقتلُ من حِلمٍ يمازجُهُ

    تيهٌ تشاوس في ألحاظ مُحتقر

    Nothing I kill more than composure combined

    With confusion wandering in contemptible glances

  19. يود منه سفيه الحي لو ضُربتْ

    لِيتاهُ موضع الأهْوانِ بالبُتُّرِ

    The vile people wish that it would be struck

    To take the place of dishonor and destitution

  20. أمَّا تريني كنصلٍ لا كميَّ له

    اُجِمَّ عن مضرب الهامات والثُغر

    While you see me as an unsheathed blade

    Not a blunt sword, inhibited from striking skulls and throats

  21. يصونه الغمد عن إبداء رونقه

    صونَ العقائل بالأمراط والخُمُر

    The scabbard protects it from revealing its edge

    As headscarves protect chaste women

  22. فكل ليلٍ إلى صبحٍ نهايته

    وإن تباعدَ أُولاهُ عن السَّحر

    For every night ends at dawn

    No matter how far its beginning from daybreak

  23. وسوف أصبحهم شعواء كافلةً

    بما أرومُ وإلا لستُ من مُضر

    And soon I will make them a turbulent morning

    Achieving what I intend, or else I am not from Mudar

  24. أُول للركب يجتاحون شاحطةً

    يهْماءَ تعسفُ بالظِّلمان والعُفُر

    First for the caravan traversing the plain

    A desolate wilderness, darkened by injustice and dust

  25. مُحْقَوْقِفينَ على الأكوار تغلبُهم

    على الأزمَّة أيدي النَّوم والفِكرِ

    Standing over the hilltops, overwhelmed

    By their hands' somnolence and contemplation

  26. كأن خمراً وورساً في رحالهمُ

    من الشُّخوب وخفق القوم العذر

    As if wine and flowering plants were in their bags

    From their fatigue and the people's chastity

  27. أن رمتم خفض عيشٍ نام عاذله

    فرجِّعوا بمطاياكم إلى نَظَرِ

    If you spurned a life of repose and justice

    Then return with your camels to reason
