1. بنو المُظفَّرِ والأيامُ شاهدةٌ

    بيضُ العوارف والأنْسابِ والأثر

    The tribe of al-Muzaffar, time bears witness,

    Are pure in lineage, morals, and deeds.

  2. لا يعضلُ المحلُ جدواهم لطارقهم

    ولا يحلُّونَ في الغُلاَّنِ والخَمَرِ

    Their places never perplex the visitor,

    Nor do they recline amidst decadence or wine.

  3. تشكو مراجلهم فرطَ الوقودِ كما

    تشكو النَّواصف فرط القرِّ والخصر

    Their cooking pots complain of excess wood,

    As do their waists of excess flesh and hips.

  4. فساهراتٌ من التَّرْداد في صَرد

    وراسياتٌ من الإِيقادِ في سُعُرِ

    In vigil they toss about deliriously,

    And awake stoking flames into a blaze.

  5. إذا استراحتْ ظُباهمْ من مُنازلةٍ

    فلاغِباتٌ بعقْر النِّيبِ والجُزُرِ

    When their youth rest from courting,

    Absent are those who rend the hyena and billy goat.

  6. همُ نمَوْا عضد الدين الجواد وقد

    غاض النَّوال وذلَّت نجدةُ البشرِ

    They grew to support the arm of the noble religion when

    Assistance was scarce and the common folk submissive.

  7. فجاء أغلبَ مَضَّاءً لِعَزْمتهِ

    تُغْني سحائب كفَّيْهِ عن المطرِ

    Then came al-Aghlab with his white intention,

    Whose palms' clouds suffice instead of rain.

  8. يُكاثرُ الخِضْرِم الزَّخار نائلهُ

    ويغلب البأسُ حدَّ الصَّارمِ الذكر

    He defeats green palm trees with his gifts

    And overpowers the memory of the sharp sword.

  9. ويفضلُ الأورق العاديَّ مُحْتَبياً

    إذا استخفت حلوم الرجَّحِ الصُّبُر

    The lame bests the firm-footed in flight

    When the flesh of the feather-legged is weakened.

  10. ولا يَمُنُّ وإنْ أغْنَتْ مكارمهُ

    لكن لدثر العطايا أيُّ مُحتقرِ

    He disdains not to bestow gifts,

    Rather he cloaks the despised in his generosity.

  11. إذا الحيا صاب من كفَّيْهِ شائمَهُ

    أغضى حياءً وكفَّ الطرف عن نظر

    If an asker comes to his palms,

    He looks away in shyness and averts his gaze.

  12. وإنْ تَعالى رجالٌ عند جُودهُمُ

    فمخبتٌ غيرُ ذي كبر ولا أشَر

    And if men rise above his generosity,

    He is tranquil, neither arrogant nor wicked.

  13. في الودِّ أغْيدُ غُصنٍ لانَ ملمسهُ

    وفي الحفيظة شختُ الحدِّ ذو أثر

    In love, I am a pliant branch, smooth to the touch,

    In protection, a sharp sword leaving a trace.

  14. مُحمَّدُ الخير مِطْعامُ العشيِّ إذا

    هَرَّ الشتاء وعاث القُرُّ في الدَّثر

    Muhammad is sustenance on a wintry night

    When the cold grows intense and pierces skins.

  15. كأنما ذكرُه في كل مُجتمعٍ

    نفح من الروض أو نشرٌ من القُطُر

    Mentioning him in any gathering

    Is like a meadow's breeze or sprinkle of rain.

  16. أستصغر القول في إِسهابِ نعمتهِ

    إذا مدحتُ فإسهابي كمُختصرِ

    My words fall short describing his generosity;

    My praise, though prolonged, is but concise.

  17. ويعجبُ الناس من بحرٍ يجودُ له

    راجيه عن فائض النَّعماء بالدُّررِ

    And people wonder at a sea which bestows

    Its seekers pearls in excess bounty.

  18. أنا الأخير ولكني سبقتُ بني ال

    فضل الأوائل من بدوٍ ومن حضر

    I am the last, though I surpassed the sons

    Of former and latter nobility in merit.

  19. طاب النسيم دُجىً في كل غاليةٍ

    للنَّاشقين وكان الفضل للسَّحرِ

    The morning breeze was sweet in every lofty abode,

    To the passionate, and the excellence was of poetry.

  20. فهنِّيَ الدهر لم أخصص به رجَباً

    نُعمى بقائك زينُ الدهر والعُصُر

    Give me glad tidings; I specified it not only for Rajab,

    The prosperity of your existence graces time and era!
