إنَّ الأمير شهاب الدين غرَّتُه

تهدي الهُداةَ ونجم الليل مستترُ

Indeed Prince Shihab al-Din was deceived

By those who guide and the hidden star of night

من معشرٍ إنْ رضوا فالناس قاطبةً

ترضى وإنْ سخطوا فالحبل منتشر

If a group is pleased, all people are pleased

And if they are angry, the rope is untied

قد كان يجمعنا منْ كان أعْهدهُ

من حُسن عهدٍ به الأيامُ تفتخرُ

He who we were accustomed to

For his good promise, the days are proud of him

وما عرَفْتُ لقطْعِ البرِّ سابقَةً

فهل يَصُحُّ لنا ذنبٌ فيُغْتفرُ

I never knew precedents for cutting ties

Is it right for us to have a fault that is forgiven?

فإن تكنْ مُحكماتُ الودِّ سابقةً

فصاحب السر فيما بيننا عُمَر

If bonds of love take precedence

Then the keeper of secrets between us is Umar

قد صحَّ من بعد ذا ما قيلَ في مثلٍ

وتُذْنبون فنأتيكمْ ونعتذرُ

What was said in the likes of this has been true

You sin, so we come to you and apologize
