1. يسُحُّ نوالُهُ من غير شَيْمٍ

    إذا ما أخْلَفَ الجَوْنُ الرُّكامُ

    His generosity flows without reserve

    When youth’s ardour cools into calm

  2. ويَحْمي والمَعاقِلُ مُسْلِماتٌ

    وقد ذَلَّ المُثَقَّفُ والحُسامُ

    Defending the fortresses, staunch in faith

    While swords and men of learning bow meekly down

  3. ويَرْزُنُ والرَّواسِي طائشاتٌ

    كأنَّ رَبيطَ حَبْوَتِهِ شَمامُ

    The bridges tremble, unsteady in themselves

    As if the ropes securing their planks were mere threads

  4. ويعءتكرُ الدُّجى وقْتاً وحَظّاً

    فيَجْلوها النَّدى والابْتِسامُ

    Gloom alternates awhile with joy and delight

    Till chased away by the smile of dawn’s dew

  5. ويحْسُدهُ على لُطْفِ السَّجايا

    زُلالُ الماءِ عَذْباً والمُدامُ

    He envies water its gentle pleasure

    Sweet to drink and tempered with wine

  6. يَرُقُّ لسائليهِ ومُعْتَفيهِ

    ويَقْسو حينَ يرتفِعُ القَتامُ

    Gracious to both petitioner and penitent

    Yet harsh when the darkness of war descends

  7. إذا الوزراءُ مَتُّوا بالمَساعي

    شَآى الوزراءَ أحْمَدُها الهُمامُ

    When the ministers succumb to fatigue

    The illustrious hero relieves their burdens

  8. شآهُمْ موْثلٌ من كلِّ خَطْبٍ

    إذا لم يُلْفَ منْ شَرٍّ عِصامُ

    He relieves them, a refuge from every peril

    When no ties of kinship can ward off harm

  9. يُدِرُّ المَحْلُ ديمَةَ راحتَيْهِ

    ويُغْريهِ بنائلهِ سَلامُ

    He keeps the realm happy in peace and comfort

    Luring it with his gifts to well-being

  10. عَزوفُ النفس عن حُبِّ الدَّنايا

    وبالعَلْياءِ صَبٌّ مُسْتَهامُ

    Aloof from love of this lowly world

    And roused to fervour for lofty deeds

  11. هو السيفُ الصَّقيلُ بكفِّ ذمْرٍ

    فلا نابي الغِرارِ ولا كَهامُ

    He is the sword burnished by a warrior’s hand

    Needing no whetstone, no shield for its edge

  12. يُجرِّدُه ويُغْمِدُه مضاءٌ

    وحِلْمٌ إذْ يَجِلُّ الاِجْتِرامُ

    Unveiled and sheathed by valour

    And clemency when rage would run wild

  13. فعند السَّلءمِ صَفْحٌ واحْتمالٌ

    وعند الحربِ بطْشٌ وانتقامُ

    Gentle in peace, avenging in war

    A king’s crown is not won by miserliness

  14. وما تاجُ المُلوكٍ بمُسْتَزادٍ

    وجودُ يديْهِ والنُّعْمى سِجامُ

    But by the bounty of his hands and noble nature

    With my heart and rhymes I sing his love

  15. بقلبي والقوافي منْ هَواهُ

    وجودِ يديْهِ والنُّعْمى غَرامُ

    The bounty of his hands and noble nature

    So my praise cannot be touched by blame

  16. فمَدْحي لا يلُمُّ بهِ مَعابٌ

    ووُدِّي لا يَدِبُّ إليهِ ذامُ

    And my love breeds no rancour in return

    I am not like those whose affection is pretence

  17. ولستُ كمنْ مودَّتُهُ رِياءٌ

    ولا مَنْ حَبْلُ صُحبتهِ رِمامُ

    Or whose bonds of friendship are gossamer threads

    I was created by the loyal to be true

  18. خُلِقْتُ أبا الوَفاءِ لغيرِ مُجْدٍ

    فكيفَ بمنْ أنامِلُهُ غَمامُ

    So how could one made of clouds enrapture me?

    If my rhymes complain of him in part

  19. فإنْ شكَتِ القَوافي بعضَ ما بي

    فليسَ إليه ينصَرفُ الكلامُ

    My speech is not addressed to him in full

    Rather I complain of my time to him

  20. ولكن أشْتكي زَمَني إليهِ

    وبالشّكْوى إليه لا ألامُ

    And in complaining to him I cannot go wrong

    As sickness is complained of to the doctor

  21. كما أنَّ الطَّبيبَ إليهِ يُشْكى

    السَّقامُ ولم يكُنْ منهُ السَّقامُ

    Though he did not cause the sickness

    To conceal one’s secret thoughts from a loved one

  22. وكِتْمانُ السَّرائرِ عن حبيبٍ

    بفَتْوى الحبِّ كِتْمانٌ حَرامُ

    Is forbidden by love’s decree
