O you who claim that passion in your heart
Has consumed your fortitude and flown off with your reason—
Whoever is sincere in professing love
Conceals the beloved and never divulges his love.
Can he seek union with a veiled beloved, when before him
White blades are drawn by black ones from the beloved’s lashes?
Impossible! Die of anguish over what
Your inmost heart has harbored; conceal your passion—or proclaim it.
