1. وَافَى بِوَجْهٍ كَالهِلَالِ مُرَكَّبٍ

    فِي قَامَةٍ غَضِّيَّةٍ هَيْفَاءِ

    He came, his crescent-like face set

    upon a tender, slender-waisted form;

  2. وَبِمُقْلَةٍ خَفَقَ الفُؤَادُ وَقَدْ رَنَتْ

    إنَّ الخفوقَ يَكُونُ عَنْ سَوْدَاءِ

    and with an eye—when it gazed intently—the heart fluttered,

    for fluttering comes from a little black spot.

  3. وافى بِوجهٍ كَالهِلالِ مُركَّبِ

    في قامةٍ غَضِّيَّةٍ هَيفاءِ

    He came, his crescent-like face set

    upon a tender, slender-waisted form;

  4. وَبِمُقلةٍ خفَقَ الفَؤادُ وقَد رَنَت

    وَكذا الجُنونُ يَكونُ عَن سَوداءِ

    and with an eye—when it gazed intently—the heart fluttered,

    and madness likewise comes from black bile.
