يَشْكُو إِلَيْكَ مُتيَّمٌ
صَبٌّ جَفاهُ هُجُوعُهُ
A lovesick man complains to you—
an ardent lover whom sleep has forsaken.
يَعْصِي العَذُولَ على هَوىً
بِكَ لا يَزالُ يُطيعُهُ
He defies the reprover for a passion
for you, which he never ceases to obey.
يَكْفِيكَ مِنْ أَلمِ الجَوَى
مَا ضُمِّنَتْهُ ضُلُوعُهُ
Enough for you of love’s inward torment is
what his ribs have been made to hold.
إِنْ لَمْ تَرِقّ لَهُ فَقَدْ
رَقَّتْ عَلَيْهِ دُمُوعُهُ
If you do not pity him, then indeed
his tears have pitied him.
