بَعَثَ الكِتَابَ بِرُقْعَةٍ مُحْمَرَّةٍ

جَاءَتْ تُهَدِّدُنَا بِفَرْطِ جَفائِهِ

He sent the letter in a small red note

It came threatening us with his excessive aloofness

فَسَأَلْتُهَا عَنْهُ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّهُ

ذَبَحَ الوِدَادَ فَكُنْتُ بَعْضَ دِمَائِهِ

So I asked her about him, and she said

He slaughtered affection, and I was some of its blood
