1. أَملٌ سَعيتُ أَجدُّ في إتْمامِه

    فَعلامَ حَلَّ الدَّهْرُ عِقْدَ نِظَامِهِ

    A hope for which I strove to complete

    Why then did fate unravel its perfection?

  2. وَإلى متى يَسْعى الزّمانُ لَنَقْضِ ما

    أَسْعَى بِكُلِّ الجَهْدِ في إبْرامهِ

    How long will time strive to undo

    All I have built with utmost effort?

  3. وَإذا الفتى قَعدتْ قَوائِمُ حَظّهِ

    قام الرّدى مِنْ خَلْفهِ وَأَمَامِهِ

    When a youth's fortunes decline

    Misery stands before and behind him

  4. دَامَ الوزيرُ مُمتَّعاً بِخُلودِه

    فَدوامُ تَشْييدِ العُلى بِدَاومهِ

    The minister remains, delighting in eternity

    So the lofty edifice endures through his constancy

  5. السَّعْدُ في أبوابهِ وَالأَمْنُ في

    إِقْليمِهِ وَالرِّزْقُ فِي أَقْلامِهِ

    Good fortune fills his gates, security his lands

    Sustenance flows from his pens

  6. وَالشّمْسُ مِن قَسَمَاتِهِ وَالجُودُ فِي

    تَقْسيمهِ وَالبرُّ في أَقْسامهِ

    The sun allotted by his hand, generosity in his division

    Goodness in his shares, ferocity when roused,

  7. والبأسُ في يَقَظاتهِ وَالحلمُ في

    غَفَلاتهِ وَالعلْمُ ملءُ كلامهِ

    Clemency when unaware, knowledge filling his words

    Truth in his speech, justice in his acts

  8. والصدقُ في أَقْوالِهِ والحقُّ في

    أَفعالهِ والعَدْلُ في أَحْكامهِ

    God as his protector, victory from his helpers

    Fate his servant, his nature mastered

  9. وَاللّه مِنْ حُفَظائِه وَالنَّصْرُ مِنْ

    أعوانهِ والدَّهْرُ مِنْ خُدَّامهِ

    By its beauty, its blessings, and its serenity

    The generous came first, and the minister followed

  10. مَلكتْ سَجيّتُه الجميلَ بجيمهِ

    وَبِميمهِ وَبيائهِ وَبلامهِ

    Trusting God in all his motions and stillness

    Bestowing virtues their due, awake or dreaming

  11. جاءَ الكِرامُ بِبَدْءِ جُودِهم وَقدْ

    جاءَ الوَزيرُ بِبَدْئهِ وَخِتَامهِ

    Why does my fortune retreat

    Whenever I present it to my days?

  12. مُسْتَعْصِمٌ باللّهِ في حَركاتهِ

    وَسُكونهِ وَقُعودهِ وَقيامهِ

    Shall I be disgraced by days belonging

    To one I hoped would grant me glory?

  13. مُغْرىً بإعطاءِ المكارِمِ حَقَّها

    في حالِ يَقْظَتِه وَحالِ منامِهِ

    Far from me are leadership and mastery

    And gifts I grew accustomed to receiving

  14. ما بالُ حَظّي كُلمّا قَدَّمتُه

    دَفعتْهُ أيّامي إلى إحْجامهِ

    O highest son, father of the lofty, brother of the sublime

    The flowers of stars, none can match your stature

  15. أَأُذَلُّ فِي أَيَّامِ مَنْ قَدْ كَانَ لي

    ظَنٌّ بِنَيْلِ العزِّ في أَيَّامهِ

    Should one like me complain of passion

    And blame the age, while you rule it?

  16. حَاشا الرّياسَةَ والسّيادَةَ والنَّدى

    حاشا الَّذي عوّدتُ مِنْ إنعامهِ

    Where is the honor in fulfilling the rights

    Of one whose reins are in your hands?

  17. يا ابْنَ العُلى وأبا العُلى وأخا العُلى

    وَمَنِ النُّجوم الزُّهرْ دُونَ مقامهِ

    Scorn not the lowly, whose virtues

    May rise above the virtues of others

  18. أيكون مِثْلي في الهَوى مُتَظلّماً

    يَشْكو الزّمانَ وأنْتَ مِنْ حُكّامهِ

    Wretched is youth - no joy I drew from it

    Only misery and darkness I knew

  19. أيْنَ المُروءَة والقيامُ بِحقِّ مَنْ

    ألْقى إليْكَ ذِمامَهُ بِزمَامهِ

    Why am I blamed for the age's sins

    When I have no crime to answer for?

  20. لا تَحْقِرَنَّ صَغِيرَ قَوْمٍ رُبَّما

    كَبُرتْ فَضائِلهُ على أقْوامهِ

    Sustenance is too base for me to waste

    My days excusing myself before any but you

  21. تَعِسَ الشَّبابُ فما سُعِدْتُ بِشَرْخهِ

    وَلقَدْ شَقيتُ بِظُلْمهِ وَظَلامهِ

  22. أَمُكلِّفي ذَنْبَ الزَّمانِ وَليْسَ لِي

    ذَنْبٌ يُؤاخِذُني على إجْرامِهِ

  23. الرِّزْقُ أَحْقَرُ أَن أُضَيِّعَ مُدَّتي

    بِالعُذْرِ عِنْدَ سِوَاكُمُ وَملامِهِ
