عُرَيْبٌ كَانَ لي مَعَهُمْ عُهُودٌ
ظَنَنْتُ بَقاءَها وَلَهُمْ وِدَادُ
An Arab I was, and bonds with them I shared
I thought they'd last, and friendship would be spared
عَهِدْتُ لَديْهِمُ خُلُقاً جميلا
وَقَدْ غَضِبُوا وَلوْ رُدُّوا لَعادُوا
To them I gave the fairest traits of mine
Yet angry now, though they return, decline
