يا سَوءَتا مِن طِلابي يا أَبا الحَسَنِ
أَخلَيتُ ظَهري لَهُ مِن مُثقَلِ المِنَنِ
Alas, what shame my petitioning has brought me, Abu al-Hasan!
Through that petitioning, you relieved my back of the crushing burden of favors.
بابُ الأَميرِ خَلاءٌ لا أَنيسَ بِهِ
إِلّا اِمرُؤٌ واضِعٌ كَفّاً عَلى ذَقَنِ
The emir’s gate is deserted, with not a soul for company there,
except one man, resting a palm upon his chin.
كَفَيتُكَ الدَهرَ لا أَلقى أَخا ثِقَةٍ
بِبابِ دارِكَ يُستَدعى عَلى الزَمَنِ
I shall spare you even him forever; never shall I meet a trustworthy man
at the gate of your house, appealing for redress against Time.
