أُسارِقُها خَوفَ المُراقِبِ لَحظَةً
وَأوحي بِطَرفي ما أُلاقي مِنَ الوَجدِ
I steal a glance at her, for fear of the watcher,
and with the corner of my eye tell her what I suffer from longing.
فَيَفهَمُهُ عَن طَرفِ عَينِيَ قَلبُها
فَتوحي بِطَرفِ العَينِ أَنّي عَلى العَهدِ
Her heart understands it from the corner of my eye;
then with the corner of her eye she signals, “I remain true to our pledge,”
وَأَنّا بِحَمدِ اللَهِ لَم نَأتِ ريبَةً
وَأَنّا جَميعاً مِن جَوى الهُبِّ في جَهدِ
and that, praise be to God, we have done nothing to arouse suspicion,
and that we both, from love’s inward fire, are in sore distress.
