لَيتٌ تَلَهَّفتُ عَليهِ وَما

يُغني عَليَّ اليَومَ مِن لَيتِ

I wish I had longed for him, but alas

"I wish" is no use to me today

إِنَّ أَبا الفَضلِ عَلى سَروِهِ

لَم يَزعُموهُ طَيِّبَ البَيتِ

Abu al-Fadl, though lofty his stature

Was not claimed to be of noble descent
