1. Tears have grown enamored of streaming,

And a heart has persisted in throbbing.

  2. Indeed, the day at the dune robbed us of the freshness

    Of those boughs and dunes,

  3. Through separation that came after togetherness,

And distance that settled in after closeness.

  4. Weep, you two, for these dwelling places, which

The two Mirzam stars wore away after their people left.

  5. Join the rain in weeping for them, though it was

Free of everything you two feel.

  6. It lavished itself upon them, and they acquired new

Robes from it, abundant in colors.

  7. So they sway between its green silk

And its crimson brocade, in beauty,

  8. In a sky of the meadow's green, wherein

    Are stars of anemone blossoms,

  9. And yellow and white among its colors,

Like silver and pure gold brought together.

  10. And it shows you lovers on a day of reunion,

In the embrace of buttercups and daisies.

  11. Spring fashioned from them a likeness of the character

Of Husayn, possessed of generosity and beneficence.

  12. So the trees seem to rise above its knolls

With a scattering of rubies and coral.

  13. And the east wind seems to wander through them

With a breath of camphor and saffron.

  14. I have played the youth; excuse me, or blame me:

Youthful passion is my only concern.

  15. And I recalled gray hair's arrival, so I hastened to claim

My share of wine and fragrant herbs,

  16. With a match for Time, who, when he welcomes you,

Is better than Time at its fairest.

  17. And indeed I mix the wine with languor—

No, with magic from Arslan's two eyes.

  18. And I exchange its cups with the radiant king,

As one drinking companion does with another.

  19. So it is as though I drink with the full moon,

Over the wine, in that vaulted hall.

  20. A pride born of eminence scorns in him

The thought of lording it over his companions.

  21. And he bears the mark of generosity,

Which has carried his praise to every tongue.

  22. The majesty of kingship has enveloped him, while

The qualities of gallant youths have taken hold of him.

  23. He joins his glory to the necklace of the Pleiades,

And both his hands are joined to generosity.

  24. O Abu al-Qasim, apportioned in glory

For the day of giving and the day of spear-thrusts,

  25. You have inherited eminence from Ardashir,

    And Qabadh, and from Anushirwan.

  26. And I see night and day as one

When you appear with your radiant face.
