نَعَتَّبتُ دَهراً فَلَمّا رَجَعـ
ـتُ إِلى حاصِلِ الطَمَعِ الكاذِبِ
I complained for an age; then, when I returned
to the outcome of false hope,
بَكَيتُ عَلى عُمرِيَ المُنقَضي
وَنُحتُ عَلى شِعرِيَ الخائِبِ
I wept for my life gone by,
and lamented my unsuccessful verse.
فَأَينَ اِعتِناءُ أَبي الصَقرِ بي
وَرَأيُ أَبي بَكرٍ الكاتِبِ
Where, then, is Abu al-Saqr’s care for me,
and the judgment of Abu Bakr the scribe?
نَشَدتُكُما اللَهَ أَن تَدفَعا
ذِمامي وَأَن تَنسَيا واجِبي
I adjure you both by God to cast aside
my claim on you and forget my rightful due.
