1. Al-Fadl has virtues befitting his excellence,

    Such virtues would never shun a man like him.

  2. He gathered all noble virtues in qualities

    That had never come together in a lord before him.

  3. So whenever he stops, glory stops; and whenever he travels

    Onward, glory travels in his shadow.

  4. His generosity is hope fulfilled, and his word

    When he promises is a branch of his deeds.

  5. He distributed his ancestral wealth to those far and near,

    And deemed the path to praise the best of his paths.

  6. No summit of eminence ever taxed the generous

    But he attained it at his easiest pace.

  7. His conduct tells you of his nearness to prophethood,

    And a thing's part tells of its whole.

  8. And sufficient for him are al-Ma'mun, al-Mahdi, and al-Man-

    sur, in place of deeds, be they many or few.

  9. An honor, Abu al-Abbas, whose due you have upheld;

    So you shunned every base deed for its sake.

  10. God bears witness, and He is the best witness,

    That your father's paternal cousin is the best of His messengers.
