Do you not see the pouring rain cloud drawing near?
It has blanketed the earth, and its sluice-mouths have burst open.
The wind drives it on by turns, then sweeps it downward;
the thunder now calls out to it, now whispers in its ear.
It weeps, and the face of the earth smiles forth in blossoms
like brocade—no, you will see no brocade to rival it.
Still it pours in an unbroken, streaming abundance,
never letting up; and I have an eye that rivals it:
downpour for downpour, streaming for streaming—
tears that disclose the grief I used to hide.
Then it cleared away, while my tears would not cease,
and the heart holds all the sorrows it holds,
yearning for a gazelle-fawn whom the sun does not resemble,
nor the crescent when its nights have come to fullness.
Yet he is an enchantment passing over the earth,
wearing out my heart, though guiltless, and wasting it away.
And now it is plain that I am enthralled, consumed by love;
so he has donned conceit, withholding himself in haughty disdain.
